Mister B Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Medals 0-20 Aweomse!20-50 Nice.50-100 Ok.100-200 Hmmm what am I going to do with these things?200-300 Sjoe this old shoe box is getting heavy.>300 Anyone want a few hundred medals* * no really - I have a few shoe boxes filled with old medals... Met a chap who had all his old running medals encased in glass to make coasters for his bar...brilliant idea, nice talking peice in your pub!
Lucky Fish Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 I have seen where there was an oversupply of last year's medals being used for this year. No thank you.
MTB_Roadie Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 maybe oneday put all the medals on a bar and cover it with a glass sheet..that way it is always there...I personally like a medal, just because I know what race I did and having it for my own display and to see how many races I done....long ago PPA used to hand out these badges at events, now that was a bunch of crap...people used to stitch it onto their clothes....
Bergbok Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Ironman and Cape Epic medals, hell yeah. Will also keep the ultra marathhon mtb stuff i suffered through. The rest, not thanks. have hundreds around in boxes in the garage..
Lou Zealand Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Keep the medal and give me a beer! That's why the only useful medal I have in my "man-drawer"* is the dischem ride for sight medal... it's a bottle opener * with apologies to Michael McIntyre
Mads Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Well. I am still at the 0-20 And I prefer a medal as a pose to a water bottle - Not that I do any thing with it. It hangs on a hook on the hall stand next to my helmet. But it is like small steps on my ladder. Or that.. Got the T-shirt thing
Mads Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 My friend did his first 35km mtb event this weekend. He suffered a lot and wanted to turn around at 6km. I had to encourage and help him all the way. When he eventually finished he was shredded. The moment he received his medal his whole face changed. That was his reward for all the suffering. He cant wait for the next race. That is why I want one. Was this at the Hex on Saturday in De Doorns? I am the one that actually did turn around. Wondered about him. Glad he made it and did not turn around.
DownhillingKing Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 I'd only expect a medal if I got a podium finish, other wise I might as well buy one.
The Crazy German Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Yup, the first couple of times you receive one is quite nice ... BUT ...if you werent 1st, 2nd or 3rd, they dont mean jack! Who cares if you were 26432th in the World Funride Championships? What does they guy get in 4th place at the Olympics? Not even a pat on the back or a mention in the record books Keep the medal and give me a beer! He/She gets an Olympic certificate which you get for first eight and is actually valued quite highky amongst athletes, you obviously never made it to the olympics else you would have known. Cheers Crazy
The Drongo Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Medal, cool. Can always sell the boxes of off for scrap later. But what has happened to THE COOL THREADS once given away in THE RIDERS SIZE ??? Them I can wear, to the shops even. A whole bunch of medallions round my neck 'jus gonna make me look like Slim Shady. Pick up on the T-Shirt thing again ORGAN-IZERS! What's wrong with the Sponsors?
Slowbee Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 for now .. the medals are cool. Gives junior'ess something to play with .. and when she holds them and puts them round her neck dad gets to look at the date and tell her stories about that ride .... usually a bit fishy, cause mom always spears them. Buts is a fun sport non the less.

Absolutely, and when they wear out, you can use them as rags for cleaning the bike

GLuvsMtb Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I installed a curtain rail on a blank wall in my study. My wife and I hang our madals on the rod. It makes an impressive display, but is a bit cluttered. I cleared space in the middle for my favorite medals, being my 3x Attakwas, Sani2C, Trans Baviaans, Sabie Experience and a medal I got after a 5 day tour in Southern Namibia, called the Hunsberg Hellride. This was the ride that really got me into the long multi stage type rides. Keeping space for a Cape Pioneer Trek medal, an Epic medal and perhaps one day a Freedom Challenge Basutu Blanket.
buffy Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Give me a shirt instead at least I will wear the shirt. Medals just clutter up all over the show.
Purnjap Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 (edited) Give me a shirt instead at least I will wear the shirt. Medals just clutter up all over the show.It is very important that I get a medal for each race completed, as my seven year old son gets one for every swimming gala, rugby weekend and/or cricket tourney won, and we are competing to have the most. Serious stuff. But the only ones that really mean anything to me would be Crater Cruise's and Legend Gorge 70k. Those two remind me what slow death feels like Edited May 31, 2011 by Purnjap
