Guys, I am sure that it is only 'cause you were awake that you predicted the outcome of a particular driver's decision and were able to take evasive action. We all quickly learn that the car is steel but we are flesh; but what this bus dude did is simply unacceptable. And his attitude (from a bus that is designed to show off the best sides of our city) only served to make it that much worse!

I think I am getting a nervous system fry-up every time I go out; which is almost every day. With constant pre and post ride visualization I am aiming for 1 and 4 as per the poll.. IE they can try to kill me but I don't give a f%%k. Thanks to Mampara for that cool pic on his post F.E.A.R.

Funnily enough I also find Taxis to be the most considerate/accomodating of motorists.

As others have said middle age men in 4x4's - you beter watch out for them !

Must say if people on the road just make their intensions known ie. signal then allot of this can be avoided.

Also people sometimes seem uncertain as to what to do with a cyclist - like they wont pull away at a robot

I don't surf (terrible balance), but love watching the surfers as I used to be a surfing judge for Natal Defense team. It is nice to know what is considered major moves, it helps with appreciation. It is amazing how many international surfers come through Jbay. :o

I spend too much time at work, so I do not have much cycling time. :(

At the risk of sounding personal, how can one be a judge of a sport if you've never done it yourself?

Um, I was thinking 3,4 ... but when my wheel got bumped once by a virtually stationary Blue Ribbon Bakery truck, I used words in the 5 o' clock traffic to make a sailor blush. My beautiful Vento now has a 5cm wobble, and I don't buy Blue ribbon bread. So I have to go 3,2 (Seldom, Angry).

When stopped at a red light, wanna know when it's turned orange/red for the cross traffic when you can't see the light? Look at how the cars speed up to chase a late orange/blatant red. Morons.

Geez and I thought that only happenned in Durban... Counted 7 cars through a red light the other day on my way home!!!!!

Edit: 3 and 3 for me

We need eyes on the backs of our eyes on the backs of our heads on the underside of our shoes on the tread on our tyres and on the tape on our bars and even with all these extra sets of peepers we can still be hit by a blind driver!

@ Joe Low its like in instant adrenal fight or flight response; for a flash in time we actually want to murder that g*d**m driver!

I suppose that happens when our lives are placed in immediate danger.

As an observation, I nearly took out a rider this morning on the way to the gym at 5am. NO LIGHTS!!! none on the front or the rear. He seemed oblivious to the situation he was putting himself in. Soon to be an organ donor. We don't need his kind in this gene pool!

You're right.

If I die on the bike, I know what my last words will be, having rehearsed the situation a couple of times.

Nothing uplifting, wise nor inspirational, unfortunately :)

5. Intermittent .. some days very often and others very rarely.

5. Pending the incident ... if it is a real mistake then deal with it, if the chop jumps a stop sign, red light or wants to force himself into my way while I have right of way then highly irritated!

We get alot of guys commuting to work on bikes in CT. They are not racer or even weekend warrior, types just regular guys using a bike to travel; they like to wear dark clothes, and ride dark bikes, with no lights, in winter, at 6am. Often on the wrong side of the road.

So we get the call "Cyclist Knocked Down" and I always ask "Ok but what kind of cyclist?"

These guys need more education regarding bike safety. But we have no excuse; always use a helmet, light up like a freaking Christmas tree on acid, and ride to stay alive.

We must not give the driver any reason or advantage to treat us like tar scum.

Yes, people do seem uncertain. They hesitate when it is safe to go but due to their hesitation when they finally do go it cuts it very fine.
