Rather buy in local because of gaurantee..

Just keep your proof of purchase and Avnic will honor the warranty even if bought internationally!

Add at least R1000 per unit for SA maps

The 500 does not take maps :P

Bought mine from CRC, best price and had it about 8 days later. No import duties (as long as customs does not read it as clothing garment  that is 40%) - but add about 15% for VAT and handling.

Oh....my bad, just figured as it is a GPS mapping would be needed. Does it use Google maps then? I have an Edge 305, very happy with it.

Yip. No base maps like the 305 but you can map your ride and then downlod it and overlay it on Google maps. You can also upload a map and it will give you turn by turn direction. Great unit if you don't realy need proper base maps.

You can use many mapping software products but the 305 and 500 records where you have been only. It can not have maps loaded on the unit to provide directions like the 705 or 800 can.

After downloading you ride you can map it on Training Centre, SportTracks, Google maps, Endomondo, SportyPal, Mapsource, Garmin Connect, Mapmyride, Basecamp ... the list goes on and on

You mean, you can upload a course, a route that you or someone else has already done, that will give you directions following the gps tracking points. You cant upload a map.

Thats a good price - found easygis to be the cheapest most times, but this they cant beat.

Just bought my Garmin Edge 500 from easygis today - paid today and swung by the guy on way home from work to collect. Easy as cake. They were like maybe R50 to R100 more expensive than CRC from what I can tell (not taking into account the charges levied by the credit card on forex payments). And i dont have to wait 2 weeks or whatever to get it :) So I'm stoked. Sometimes local is lekker!!

Quick question - how hardy is the rear cadence sensor unit wrt to washing and stuff?

The old ones had a hole in the plastic case, underneath the rubber 'foot'. Water used to get in there and they'd die after a while. It was really simple to plug the hole with silicone, though and the newer ones I've seen come with the hole already plugged.

Once the hole is filled, they'll survived all kinds of washes etc.

Thanks man - it's a new unit so it should be fine, I hope!!!

It's easy to check:

Just make sure you use that sealant (or another neutral-cure sealant).

There's enough adhesive on the rubber thing that it will stick back on by itself.

Without wanting to hi-jack the thread, which of these programmes is the must useful?

Without a doubt SportTracks!

Most features, reports, plug-ins that can do stuff the others have not even dreamed of.

User-friendly and you can customise just about anything.

Google Zonefive Software, they have screen shots, their own support & developers forum etc. DC Rainmaker also have some info about it on his blog. I keep discovering stuff I can do with SportTracks and I have been using it for 4 years

The worst one would be ... Garmin Training Centre!
