So this evening while driving to the store I noticed a traditional commuter coming up my road thanks to his single reflector on the front (as per law). Now regardless of the law saying we have to have a white reflector in the front and a red in the rear, I wanted to know if one gets reflective tape (white & red) to fit onto ones frame/fork?

Currently my MTB has its wheel reflectors but the tape makes more sense as it can be placed without effecting the looks of the bike.

i got some at the local farmers co-op. but that was about 9years ago. havn't seen much of it around. im sure some of the "sighn shops" will have some off-cuts lying around, maybe find out if they can spare some.

The problem is that the reflectors are required to be SABS approved (none actually are and your tape won't be). If you want to be 100% legal, you'll have to get car reflectors with the SABS stamp on them as I have never seen bike ones that conform.

But the average traffic cop doesn't know that...

The reflective material used to make road signs should be SABS approved. I used some on my old road bike some years back. Most sign companies will happily give you off-cuts. I still use the clear to protect my frames.

I bought some white tape from Builders last year to trim our road sign with, used a leftover bit on the front of the forks, I have not seen red but someone told me to try the AA shop as they stock red rolls of tape. I was looking for some for my 4x4 but wound up buying some big ass reflectors and stuck them on the bumper instead!

Builders Ware House will have for you.

I have bought both white and red there before and used this as frame protection ... it just so happened to perfectly match my bikes at the time.

TIP: if you put reflective tape on your bike, first put a few strips (next to each other to the width required) of insulation tape on smooth surface (do not stretch). Cover with reflective tape. Remove and cut to size. This way it is much easier to remove is required. Reflective tape goes brittle after a while and you will not be able to remove it otherwise.
