Not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but here's what I wanna know..

This Saturday I was taking a breather at a garage, when a group of riders came past - 10 to 15 guys. I figured, why not, I'll join 'em. So I caught up and lurked near the back of the group. Didn't interfere or anything cos I realized I dont know if there's an accepted 'code of conduct' for this kind of thing.

What's the etiquette on this? Do I need to ask the guy nearest the back if I can join them? Can I just cycle along with them without having to ask anything? What's the deal?

Introduce yourself, find out how far/fast they are going, ask to/state intention to hang at the back. Just be a human being ;)

You are not going to join a game of touch / soccer without introducing yourself, asking to play with, are you?

Thanks guys... Appreciate the feedback.

So just cycle up to the guy nearest the back & ask if I can join?

And with regards cycling at the front... What's the etiquette there? Do I just overtake the guy in front & lead? What about if they're on a pre-planned route that I'm not familiar with?... LOL, can just imagine they all turn off and I just keep on riding :P

well if it's a windy section of the road and there are a lot of corners then just wait at the back, but otherwise if everybody is taking a turn just go up, even if it's for a short period.

otherwise you'll just be a suck-up, literally.

Ask otherwise it is rude.

I 2nd this!! You dont go and join anybody's table when you walk into a restaurant. I for one wont mind if somebody join's the group but you need to introduce yourself and ask if its ok. 9 times out of 10 its fine. Sometimes when you are busy talking with your buddy and all of a sudden there is a phantom hanging on your back wheen its just bloody irritating and rude

The correct procedure is to first make sure all the logo's on your water bottles are facing to the same side as you slowly drift up to a few bike lengths from the last guy in the line. Secondly, ensure that your socks are the correct height as specified in the Euro-pro handbook. Then, as you drift into the pace-line, reach out with your left hand and gently touch the guy on the right hip/buttock so as to indicate that he is crossing over into your line; and that he, not you, should adjust accordingly. If he gives you the "evil eye" take it as a sign of his admiration and respect for your Euro-pro technique.

Ride past him and repeat the procedure until you are at the front of the line. Ignore the verbal abuse along the way. They are just testing you. Begin to accelerate until you are full gas! Keep full gas for at least 1km, then raise your right hand up as you slowly pull off to the left and as the pace-line guns past you pull out your cellphone and answer in an Italian accent. When they all turn to stare at you smile apologetically so they understand you will be unable to continue leading them. Point to the cellphone and mention an Italian sounding woman's name. Wipe the spit from your expensive Euro-pro sunglasses.

The Euro-pro wannabe should never concern themselves with making friends. The Euro-pro wannabe must at all time strive to look cool. And to copy all he sees while watching the TdF. ;)

Coolbeans, so bottom line, just be friendly & confirm it's cool with someone from the group.

Nice. I'll do that next time.

Thanks guys :)
