I can't believe that I followed all 9 pages... I think Schwinn Lover made a good point. Middle aged, two kids, bond, accounts, etc. Life doesn't get easier my man so prepare yourself! It is all about sacrifices and priorities.

We were all student once and we managed to survived. I paid board and lodging from the time I got my first "pay cheque". I managed to still buy petrol, beer, bike parts and afford race entries.

If you love it that much, you WILL make a plan. If you sit around and b!tch about it you are acting like a spoilt brat.

Get over it and go ride your bike.

These guys irritate me for one reason - they sit 2 next to eachother on a narrow path (not single track obviously) and chatting away...and do not move over when they see a girl with no 'sponsored' clothing on!!

For this reason I will vote for discounted fees for students (like the OP said who has potential) even if I have to pay more to make up the loss. Seriously I also think there must be a start group at the back for people who come for the 'joy ride' and not to 'race' - as I thought that was what it was called...anyhow.

Just my 5c worth - now someone can flip the coin back..

'Joy ride' ? I think you mean 'funride', which is what nearly all the races in South Africa are, and people are there to do exactly that - have fun! If you want to 'race', get a license, do the licensed races and start in the licensed or top-seeded groups. Then you can 'race' against fellow race snakes. But if you're so far down that you stuck behind funriders who are enjoying themselves tootling along (and it doesn't have anything to do with fancy bikes or sponsored kit etc etc) - you may need to get over yourself and resign yourself to just having fun. Tragedy. ;)

And regarding the OP - I think it has all already been said. Life's hard. You have a bike, a canoe, a car, you're at university - be grateful for what you have because its a helluva lot more than most people in SA.

Final observation. When I was in school, if I didn't win prize money on the weekend, I didn't have entry fees for the next race. If you're such a hotshot, Fruity, why aren't you funding your stellar cycling career from your winnings?

When i was at school - i rode a bicycle called a Nishiki with rigid fork, can you believe that!

This has been on odd thread. Kinda like the olde "when I was young I walked 100km to school bare foot in the snow and it was uphill both ways the roads were covered in broken glass" grandpa style lecture.

So a kid is keen to race, hasn't got the cash and made an emotional out burst to exress his view? All and sundry jump on his head and tell him that suffering is the only true path to elightenment? What? Of course all of us were the pinnacle of maturity when we were young and debated everything from a centre of logic and reason...c'mon okes. Methinks some slack is in order here.

Ironically I think he has a point - many institutions offer student discounts - why not bicycle races? Personally I think scholar and student discounts might help feed the sport. It will certainly add some zing to the current school mtb series and the intervarsity piss up stage race.

For the doc and the other interested party - here is a really bad pic of Black Betty - she's a GT3000 VR4 that was recently given a review totalling two words by my neighbour - those words were "HERE F*K!!" as the boost came on :D If you wanna see more turbo charged japanese exotica drop me a PM.

Lawyers don't discriminate.

I once read a joke that went...

You're in a room with a rabid alsation, a hungry lion with a sore tooth and a lawyer. You only have 2 bullets left in your gun - what do you do?

Shoot the lawyer. Twice.

I think you're all very unfair towards Fruity. I mean heck, the guy's making a case for saving at least R200 a month assuming he does 4 races a month and gets a 50% discount. For a guy who has absolutely nothing, do you know how much money that is ....? Besides, how else will he pay for transport costs to get to all those profitable races? ;) Surely all you degreed people enjoyed some form of student discount at some stage of your student lives. :whistling:

Here's another one, very similar though.

You're in a room with Osama Bin Laden, Adolf Hitler and Justin Bieber.

You have a gun with only three bullets, what do you do?

You shoot Justin Bieber.

Thrice.

It is tough choices. I have not bought anything for my bikes since last year and that is because I have other commitments. You need to priorities. Food on the table, or bling on the bike.

I need to lose weight, so bling on the bike, beer in the fridge then food on the table, drink beer rather than eat cos it's easier to p1ss than to ****.

while i feel your pain re: costs involved in cycling as a student, and thats its tough to afford all the race fees ,petrol etc... i agree 100% with the other posts that if you love it enough, you will make a plan!

you dont have to race every weekend - also you can save that R300 by spending one night less at the pub!
