Minion Posted July 20, 2011 Share The worst is when you go down hill you can actually smell the brake pads burning and you are not slowing down. That's the part that has me worried about attempting some of these climbs. I reckon I could manage the pain of going up. It's the terror of coming down again that I'm not so sure about.
gummibear Posted July 20, 2011 Share It slows you down enough to make the corners, but looking down and it's a 60 meter drop isn't good.
nathrix Posted July 20, 2011 Share anyone know the total ascent?It would be interesting for each stage of the TdF. Tomorrow will be a monster! I would guess its round about 4000-5000 m total ascent? "The AuRgust" is 1200 m? http://www.letour.fr/PHOTOS/TDF/2011/1800/PROFIL.gif Pinerolo Galibier Serre-Chevalier - 200.5 km Km 107.0 - Col Agnel (2 744 m) - 23.7 km climb to 6.5 % - Category H Km 145.5 - Col d'Izoard (2 360 m) - 14.1 km climb to 7.3 % - Category H Km 200.5 - Col du Galibier (2 645 m) - 22.8 km climb to 4.9 % - Category H Profile of last kilometershttp://www.letour.fr/PHOTOS/TDF/2011/1800/PROFILKMS.gif http://www.letour.fr/PHOTOS/TDF/2011/1800/CARTE.gif Edited July 20, 2011 by nathrix™ ® ©
sampie Posted July 20, 2011 Share That is almost incomprehensible! Big word for dutchman like me, but those are seriously big climbs. Even makes the Transbaviaans M.A.C. look like a speed bump! O nee, die MAC is darem op n MTB met nie die beste van paaie nie, ek so nogsteeds dis daai Fangs wat so byt.
Eldron Posted July 20, 2011 Share Jealousy mode on.... I rode this stage in 2002: The climbs were long but not that hard - a 39x23 was suitable for all but the steepest section at 10-15%. Most climbs I rode in southern france were relatively gentle. Jealousy mode off...

banna Posted July 20, 2011 Share *swipe to the hornest nest* So, looking at that profile: Who said that MTBers are tougher than Roadies? Hmmm...maybe try the Epic, Cape Pioneer, Attakwas etc. and go find out for yourself...
DaLoCo Posted July 20, 2011 Share Apparently the only climb we know of locally that can compare with Alpe'd Huez is going up Sani Pass....

andydude Posted July 20, 2011 Share Alpe'd Huez isn't even one of the toughest climbs. It is really a Cat 1, but the only reason it is always HC is because the toughest stages end with it.
