Haha yes, but they are soooo short..... The problem with BSG (although I do all of them) is that it is normally an 5 hour operation for 1 hours racing

Yes this is especially true if you are training for events like BSG Prestige and have to get 5-6 hours of training in over the weekend. I have registered for most of the BSG races but am considering cancelling this coming weekend simply cause its too short and the combo polar and tri-fuel programme I am following is fairly demanding.

Really enjoyed the race!!

Swim was great and probably one off my better swims in my very short Triathlon "career", maybe because it was so cold I just wanted to get it done..

Bike was nice but I did not feel good at all...no power in the legs..and the Run I just took easy. Was Nice to get back into the tri-season with a race like this!

Maybe I should start doing some Brick sessions again..

Maybe you guys can help. Why do I struggle so much to get going on the bike after the swim?My hrt is always high like hell even when I don't push and takes some time to settle and my legs feel like jelly?I don't have this problem with duathlons?

Also loved the 32Gi in a bottle at the end!

Ps. did you guys see the speed that guy with the kid in the Canoe swims? I stayed with him for most of the first lap and then went ahead of him but he still got out of the water in under 30min for a 1.5km swim dragging a canoe!!Strong!!

Brick sessions is a must for triathlon training, I do a long brick session every week, 4 hour ride 1 hour run, and in the middle of the week I throw in a crazy 10km speed session on the bike, into a 5km run, I repeat 4 times, it works like a bomb :-).

The trick with exiting the water is to in the last 100m kick a lot faster and harder, it will get the blood into the legs and take away the jelly feeling when coming out ;-), try it sometime. Anyone who swam without a wetsuite yesterday was either plane crazy or just plain stupid LOL, 16 degrees is no joke, i cant take the cold.

+1 on the kicking. I did this yesterday, worked like a charm (your inclination will be not to kick.. so need to remember)

I think the solution for the cold is to train in open water through the winter :) Yesterday was nice for me, not cold at all (with wetsuit) - no brainfreeze. I got severe brainfreeze in the 13deg water at EL for 70.3 and the 10 deg water at Heia in July! 17 is warm. Mental prep for the Atlantic ocean on 6 November!

Really enjoy my first Olympic distance event. Thought it was well organized, always knew where to go next.

Struggled with cramps in the last 5kms, is this due to lack of nutrition or lack of training?

Joburg triathlon very well organized, no complaints from me, if you arrive late well then you not gonna get a nice spot. Best you get up earlier Garfield laugh.gif

I must get a wetsuit though froze my fricken nuts off in that water. I thought 5150 was bad but germies was really cold. It was so cold my body went into shock I almost had to get some help in the first 100m. Instead of doing a nice easy 30m in the water it took me 40 mins sad.gif to finish

Ja Seeker thats how it is supposed to be. What exactly do you mean by late anyway? I was there at 9AM already and it was full. Dont talk rubbish...

If I pay R500 I can arrive 15min before transition closes and still should get my spot cause I paid for it. By the way I stay 90min away so probably left even before you did.

I think you still have brainfreeze with that comment...

WTF?

Cramping is 1st a training issue, if you are used to training in those disciplines and at that intensity you will not cramp, but if you are using muscles you normally would not use then expect cramping, and that is not necessarily muscles only but different fibers, such as fast or slow twitch depending on the intensity you train at.

As for nutrition, generally over hydration which causes dilution of electrolytes can cause cramping, but you will feel it all over not really localised, you will also feel nausea and dizziness with electrolyte dilution.

Train to Race ;-)

Thanks will give the kicking thing a try..I don't normaly have a problem with fast starts in both road and mtb races with very little warmup and I have been struggling with most rides after my swim. For example my 3rd 10km lap was almost 4minutes faster than the first 10km..and my avg hrt was 10 beats lower on that 3rd lap compared to the first.

I have been thinking that maybe I am a bit swim "unfit" so the effort is too big and it takes a while to recover but that does not really explain the jelly legs.

I did the Joburg City as well and it was my first ever triathlon. I got a lot to learn still.

I lost my iPhone and car keys at the event and asked anyone and everyone if they had found them. After the event was done, I got a call from the organisers saying that one of their staff members was packing up and handed all my stuff in. A BIG THANK YOU to the guy (who got a reward too) and to the organisers too. Nice event and had fun.

Glad to see that no one got taken by the Germies Lake monster fish

Or is that no one we know of.... :P

That was realy funny, SwissVan had to laugh at that pic, for 1st timers u must have scared the hell out of them. I will never forget racing and Ironman in Florida and there was a alligator scare due to rains washing them near by our swim zone, they said it was clear, but in the back of your mind u never know, I swam next to the biggest dude I could find, I figured the croc would prefer his meat and not so much bones, a little more tender LOL.

Like the Sharky waters in which we will be swimming for Challenge Cape Town. Except, that will be a REAL threat :-)

Dont stress I have swam that course many times, its way too cold for those babies to feed LOL

My apology ... I was just pulling your leg no malice intended smile.gif I fully agree with you. You pay your money and if you arrive 15 minutes before transition closes then you should have a designated spot. I really liked the way 5150 was sorted every participant was given a number and your number had a designated spot in transition. No arguments or hassles. If the organizers want to accept late registrations then they should have a "late registration" area in transition.

The one thing I was not entirely happy with was how people are able to simply walk into transition after the race and walk out with their kit. There was no control whatsoever.

Was there photographers at the race on Sunday? I recall plenty guys with big lens cameras taking photos on the bike and in the transition areas. Or was it family/friends of some competitors...?

Agreed. The quikest way to kill the sport is for theft to start taking place. Definately agree with the late entry - different transition as well. I always enter way in advance. They should have opened half of the sprints transition for us as there werent a lot of people doing that race - many open spaces and they had the lekker racks.
