Gordon's Bay is ideal for sea swimming. You can do 'n circuit; Beach -> Old Harbour -> Harbour Island -> Beach (4km).

Great Whites rarely, if ever, come into the bay there. I paddle there 2 to 3 times a week and have never noticed any Great Whites. The Seals normally lay on their backs in the water, sun tanning their tummies, which means they have no care in the world about any sharks.

Geez guys, maybe I just go for a run. I had thought you would all be out training in the sea!

It seems swimming in Cape Town is like riding a bike in JHB.

No Dude , riding a bike in Jhb is safer than swimming in CA. :D

When I was a child and teenager if a whale or shark were spotted it made the front page it was so seldom

Seals had basically been wiped out by the fishermen.

My uncle had a fleet in Kalk Bay and the seals were their worst enemy.

No seals....no sharks

Now lotsa seals....lotsa sharks

Yes you def. don't go to Cape Town for a swim in the sea. Nothing short of torture! esp. after the wind has been blowing (which it does quite often). But the beaches are great, when the wind isn't blowing. Did I mention the wind blows a lot down there as well? :o When it does, go to Clifton, it's protected.

There is some stunning slow motion footage on BBC Life (or one of their nature docs) of a Great White catching seal pups. There has also been speculation that all that Great White tourist activity (chuming etc) has changed their behavior.

Don't worry, It is understandable. Your are a shark rugby supporter from Pretoria. You most propably do not know what a real shark really is. :P
