Ask him on the Questions thread ... he is bound to respond... with questions of course! ;)

Hahahahahahaha! It's quite applicable to this thread! The healing was coming along quite nicely until Friday night. When I got home, the hounds ganged up on me and knocked me over, and I landed on the injured elbow. Had to wear the sling again for most of the weekend, but it seems to be okay now, although I haven't got the full use of my left arm and fingers back yet. :cursing:

Wow, good luck with your dog. Good move to isolate her from the other dogs during an attack. Buddy of mine had a dog that started having epileptic attackes. She had one while they werent home and his other dogs badly mauled her during this time.

I remember the lady at the BC rescue telling us the same thing, she's lost dogs because of that. I could see how the other dogs all wanted to sniff at Max after the attack, he obviously secreted massive amounts of stress hormones which I am sure the others could smell.

Just FYI - yesterday was garbage collection day here and so the dogs usually get very agitated as we have "bergies" that scratch through the garbage bins in the street. It was during such a situation that this happened - but I actually brought the dogs into the house just prior to that and I could see how Max was trying to get away from them just before he collapsed, so I think he has developed a mechanism to get himself as far away from them as possible when he feels this coming on. He is a bit of a "loner" in that regard, he doesn't usually rush out to the same gate as the other dogs, he will pick another gate or bark from a distance. Perhaps this is just me "hoping" that this is what he has been doing, but I have learned to never stop being amazed at what we can learn from dogs.

My late Lab Alaska was epileptic. Shimano, who was a really independent girl, would lie down near him and watch him during his fits.

It seems you keep almost self destructing!! Hope it heals up properly soon!

The secret to success with house training a pup is getting up at regular intervals at night and taking them out for the first week or three. I also initially kept the pups in the bathroom, but soon realised that all I am teaching them is to poop in the bathroom ;) We were really blessed with our pups, by the second week they were going out via the trap door by themselves and we only had a handful of mishaps after that, but I think all the interrupted sleep and freezing our butts off outside with them was well worth it !

I am not the best waker upper! Jazz is really trying to test me though. I can sometimes get her to "Make" on command but then other times she will be outside and litterally run inside and squad. Its amazing how much she can pee in a split second!!!

Normally take her out at about 23h00 and then at about 03h00 again when either the wife or i wake up. She had been pretty good up too last night.

Hectic afternoon yesterday, my BC Max had a full-on epileptic seizure - the first time I have witnessed this in a dog so I was mortified, but recognized it for what it was and put the other dogs away and kept Max calm. The attack was over in about 30 seconds and there was no foaming at mouth or anything else that apparently manifest in serious seizures.

We have suspected for some time that he had sustained some type of nerve damage as a pup as he frequently does "air licking" and seems to get visual disturbances (which is actually the aura of the oncoming epilepsy attack) from time to time.

He may have had this for a while, but we may not have noticed since the dogs are home alone during the day. I spent the past two months at home so I have really had them in my space every day and I fortunately was here to witness it.

His blood tests came back 100% normal this morning and he is now on a mild tranquilizer which seems to have eased things out a bit. Do any of you on here have experience with epilepsy in dogs ? (This is Max below)

So sorry to hear this

Thats unfortunately why my dog Titan was put to sleep. He was a normal healthy dog of 3 years old until he had he's first seizure on the 8th of April. It did not stop with only the one. He had a second one the same night and was blind and so confused that he had to been hospitalized and put under sedation. He was put on Phenobarbital and everything was fine until two months after that.

He had cluster seizures again on 8 June and the third and last seizure he had that day was a gran mal seizure that I could not snap him out of and had to rush him in a epileptic state to the vet. While holding him shacking and foaming it lasted about 15minutes until the Vet injected him with drugs to shut off his brain. The vet told me the amount of sedating drugs he gave Titan was about four times more than than usual and we must embrace our selfs for the worst.

But Titan pulled trough and was only temporarily blind for about a day and was normal after that. We increased he's doses of Pheno to the maximum recommended dosage. But after that the seizures just started getting more frequent and out of control that he's quality of life was deteriorating. Made the most difficult decision in my life two days ago and still question myself if I did the right thing.

It's a terrible decease that their is no cure for and I pray that your dogs condition don't get worse.

We also tried every kind of thing you could think of, raw meat diet, different immune boosters, shifted them from one part of the yard to another. Eliminated all the plants that can maybe have caused the seizures. Wish I had more money to have send him to Onderstepoort in Pretoria to see if they can maybe help him and finding out what caused all this or was it just in his genes.

You did the right thing, how hard it might have been, and still are. When I was a kid, my dog got the same thing, and it is absolutely terrible to experience.

Thanks Scale. Looking at your profile pic, they sure are beautiful and loyal animals if you know how their habits work and that they only want to run 24/7 ! My next boy names going to be Forrest!

Thanks for sharing this Wil6, I am holding on to the fact that the seizure was very short in duration and that there were no other symptoms of cluster seizures, but I am not letting the little guy out of my sight and he has literally been at my feet the entire day (a slow and steady supply of biltong treats may have something to with that). The Vet also seemed really pleased with his bloodwork and there were literally no markers outside of the norm.

I am also looking into dietary treatments for epilepsy now, as I am a Low Carb High Fat diet proponent and I have seen the huge difference that this diet has made to the frequency of seizures in my father-in-law, who was at his wits end due to meds not really helping. Cursory reading on this seems to indicate a high success rate with raw, high fat diets for epilepsy in dogs. Interestingly enough the Vet shared with us that the most common cases of epilepsy occur in Huskies, Labradors and BC's - in her experience.
