Who rides with this grouppo? Are the shifters similar to the Sora or 105? Does the cassette and chain last long? Looking at using Tiagra on a training bike.... would like to know how much it will cost me to keep it going if im clocking up miles on it... thanks Smile

Logic will tell you it's better than Sora, but not quite 105 and certainly not Ultegra.  I have Tiagra on my tandem and if you're riding the grouppo socially - and not have to do quick seamless shifting then my opinion is don't waste money on the upgrade.

Mechanics Tiagra is same as 105 (lever shifter), Sora are close to Campy.

As far as lasting goes, my Tiagra cassette and chain last longer time and distance than my mates Sora.

If it's on a training bike then nothing wrong with that - However I used to ride Tiagra & had no problems for a long time ...... even raced with it,,,upgraded to 105 10sp & the difference / smoothness & shifting was felt almost instantly .... I'd say if U can upgrade - JUST DO IT !!Thumbs%20Up

Components on 9sp last a lot longer than 10sp. (obvious, as they are a lot "chunkier", chain is broader, etc) They are also cheaper to replace.

Dunno about it not being available shortly, as chainreaction still has 9sp ultegra groupo's for sale. Done close to 15000km on my Tiagra groupo. Only replaced chain twice. Never had to replace cassette or chainrings (OK, I'm quite meticulous in keeping it clean and properly lubricated)

For a training bike, it is OK, robust, does not need a lot of adjustments, etc.

Ask Johan Bornman about his expert opinion about thisWink

thnaks very much for all the opinions and guides... I am considering using the Tiagra on a training bike. I have Ultegra 10 speed on my racing bike, have not had any issues with it, other than the chain lasting less than 2000km! was a shock to me, after looking after it so well. I am contemplating selling my Ultegra grouppo, and replacing it with Veloce 10 speed, any logic in that? I've heard that Campag grouppos wear much slower than Shimano? thats my main motive....

CAMPAG WEARS IN, SHIMANO WEARS OUT

That's a saying i once heard
