I don't need to, their prices are so damn good.

You are being screwed chap. DO YOU THINK RAYMOND Jnr DOESN"T ASK FOR DISCOUNT!!

Let me spin it around - do you NOT ask for discount at your LBS?

I don't have to. I jus; get-it! - sorry for you.

You are entitled to ask for a discount and receive a civil response!

The argument do you ask for a discount at SPAR also has no merit, because you could ask for a discount there, if you wanted to. On basic groceries where prices are fairly similar and often regulated by suppliers (unless with price fixing) is there a point? On more expensive purchases you can, and often do get something back.

I have asked for a discounts on items at Checkers, when the item displayed on the package was different to the shelf edge label, and I received the labelled price. Also on goods where the packing is old or wripped.

Another example would be at Game beating any price on a fridge I recently purchased.

Like the saying goes "if you don’t ask, you don’t get"!

Mazel tov!

Being a worthy contributor to my LBS's rent, I feel rocks when squeezing a little discount.

I'm sure most of them factor in people like myself and a few others, and mark their prices up a little, so we think we are scoring all the way, and when the people with "morals" dont ask for discount, they score all the way! Give and take!

As I understand it, any card transaction carries a percentage charge from the bank.

Yes, the bank do's charge a small transaction fee, depending on how much CC sales you pass through the bank it varies from 0.5% for major retailers to around 3% for small business operators.

However, banking Cash also attracts a huge charge to the retailer, pro rata banking cash is the most expensive banking transaction you can do. Banking cheques is also expensive, EFT's are cheap but then who runs around with a lap top to buy a tyre.?

Of all banking transaction's cash is the most expensive, so if someone says to me we can only give you a discount if you pay CASH, I am immediately suspicious, because its not cheap.

To respond to all of your comments:

1. yes my story was long winded. I needed to blow off a lot of steam. Ask me for discount and perhaps I'll cut 5% of my words

2. no, I won't "name and shame". Not unless I've sent management of said shop an email first

3. yes, I left it to the last minute, hence my desperation. Had a very busy time at work and ideally should have done this all last week. That's how it goes sometimes.

4. I was never asked how I was going to pay. Could have paid cash if credit was an issue.

Paying with a CCard is not credit to the retailer - lets clear up this misconception now, a retailer is paid all card transactions when he banks the machine, this can be once twice or ten times a day. Your relationship with your bank and how you pay them is your business, its of no consequence to the retailer, as far as he is concerned he is paid on banking the machine.

I buy everything with my C Card, I get Voyager airline mileage and all sorts of other perks like Green backs, E-bucks, loyalty points and discounts paid back to my account, these are benefits you do not get with cash, cheques or EFT'S.

So, if I get told paying with a C Card means no discount because it costs the business money, I usually politely point out the above, ALL banking transactions cost the retailer money and I leave.

Asking for discount or reduction is appropriate, unless it is for R80's worth of chamois cream.

It is all part of bargaining or deal making.

Uncool attitude from the sales staff.

Discount is always goog, but if good discount is offered without asking it is even better. I received that once when we purchased snorkelling equipment!

Hijack, Sorry

There was a secondhand car I was interested in buying a month ago, cash sale.

R125k, extra R3500 for docs licencing etc. Total R129k

When I asked the saleslady about discount she said that that was the best price they could do. Mind you this was the advertised price on Autotrader. Although this was all over email so if it had been face to face it may have been a different story. Suffice to say I didn't bother to go look at the thing.

Found another, can I be cheeky and ask for cash discount and if so how much is reasonable? This one is about R130k.

Er yup, that would indeed be a wise move. Just get a Maxxis Monorail for front? I think they like R350 at CWC.

Think they'd give me some discount on that? :P

Yup! They were on special last week for R310 :D

No need to, there's a spanky Apple Mac in CWC especially for this!

I know asking for discount is a contentious issue. I know bike shops need to feed their families too. I know that some people believe that discount is earned with years of loyalty to one shop. I know others believe a discount is a right.

All I know is this - I will ask for discount, especially when I'm buying a R600 tyre and am paying you for fitment as well. And if you don't give me discount, that's fine too - at least I asked.

BUT please treat me with courtesy. The exact response I received this morning was "discount!?" from one sales person, who then turned to the next sales person who looked like he was about to burst out laughing. He then proceeded to tell me how awesome the tyre was. They never said "no" outright, they just treated me with such contempt for daring to pose the question that their answer was clear.

Appropriate responses to a customer asking for discount:

"But of course!"

"Let's see if we can work something out..."

"I'll chat to the manager and see if it's possible"

"Sorry, can't give you discount on this item, but we'll fit it for free!"

Or simply:

"Sorry, we can't give you discount on this item"

But please, don't treat me like an A-hole for asking for a simple discount. If they weren't the only people near me with that tyre, and I wasn't so desperate for it, I would have walked away. I'm notoriously impatient :)

Do you guys ask for discount at PnP, Checkers, Shoprite or any Engens out there when you stop for a coffee.

Mmmmm did not think so.
