Decision made... Going with a pair of the Castelli Aero Team bibs (R1000) and then a nice back up of 2011 Giordana silverline (R405) - delivery from the US was the same for 2 items as 1 @ $30. Cheapest I could find my size Assos was about R1250 but then there was delivery (possibly tax & duties) to SA on top & /or VAT if sent to the UK and brought over.

Very keen to get out of my current shorts and into something decent. Cheers for all the advice on this one - legends, one and all!

What site in the US are you buying from?

I bought off http://www.realcyclist.com and used their live chat to have a haggle on the shipping and a better cost, had to buy there and then but worth it. Also if you look about there are some listings on the site that are the same short but different colour ways and they are cheaper. My Silverlines are the B&W ones and the plain black ones are more expensive @ $99 while the whites are $55.

http://www.probikekit.com/za/ also are having some decent specials on at the moment if you're not a std size!

Found a great italian site doing Assos Uno's for R900 odd with 8pounds delivery to the UK but can't find it for the life of me now!

Thanks. Regarding the white pant, you should be paid the $55 to wear it...

Castelli is not always that easy to get.

Carmichael, go to Gecco at Cape Gate, probably the best range of clothing in the northern suburbs, otherwise Olympic Cycles.

I love Castelli, much more than my Assos, but be ware, the stitching on the shammy do come loose after a year.  This happened on all 3 of my Castelli's

Capestorm bibs also have a good rep.

Until you try return them because they were manufactured so poorly that they fell apart after 1 ride (personal experience, not general judgment).

Don't forget you will be paying 40% (or is it 60%?) duty on that clothing when it arrives. I hope you've factored that into your price comparisons.

I personally never buy bike clothing from a non-SA online retailer. It's not worth the risk of getting the size wrong and when you factor in the duty it is often cheaper locally.

ASSOS! but the Castelli developments lately have been great, thinking about the importance of body aerodynamics.

Aren't you the guy that's on all CWC's marketing banners. You must be a serious cyclist!!

Hmmm, this thread necro... have the prices really almost doubled in 4 years?

Where does one find Castelli in JHB. Never seen it.

I have both Assos and Castelli, I first bought a castelli and was kinda happy but on longer than 3hr rides it got uncomfortable I weighed 96kg though.

Then I jumped on the Assos wagon and it certainly felt like a huge upgrade over the castelli at the time but it too wasn't much more comfortable over 3-4hr rides.

When I was in europe I found some castelli shorts at a very good price and since 2012 I have only stuck with castelli.

I am now down to 73kg and cant fit in most of them..hehe so recently i bought a entry level castelli shorts off zando for training and i must say they definitely seem a lot more comfortable the lighter you are.

Etxeondo is also very good, I remember reading a review recently where it was voted in the top3 shorts for 2014/5

Same with First Ascent... Had 2 different pairs of First Ascent and had them replaced both within a couple of rides. Never to go there again...

Have a Bontrager bib now (very happy so far) and just ordered a Nalini Agnocasto bib (will give some feedback once recieved and tested)

Hi guys,

just need some hubbers opinions of the Assos Uno vs the Castelli Free Aero / Body paint road short. I know there is a lot of thought that it's Assos or nothing but The Castelli's have been getting some good reviews and wondered if there was anyone running the Castellis who might have switched from Assos... or anyone got any thoughts.

I'm looking to spend about R1500 either way (via Wiggle or CRC) and not the R3000 for the upper level Assos.

I found this review of Bib shorts in the June edition of Cycling Plus and they seem to rate a few different models highly.

Cheers guys for any thoughts one way or another.

Assos all the way - be kind to your bum :)
