Can someone explain why the bike have cantilever brakes and not V-brakes. It can't be for mud because MTB also ride in the mud.

 

 

 

Those are parralel push canti's. Very powerful. I also think it might be a weight issue.

It is for mud, the cross bikes have much less clearance than a MTB

A roll down drop off....sad thing is I know mountain bikers with full suspension bikes that won't ride something like this....

Back in the day when this photo was taken, the men used to do stuff like run the Comrades on the Saturday in their rugby boots, and then play a rugby match on the Sunday, in their 'running' shoes....

 

They don't make 'em like they used to...

 

But I get what you're saying.

I think if more mtb'ers in RSA were exposed to CX - and saw what it was that these guys could do on their bikes, there'd be a sea-change in the mindset of what exactly mtb'ing should be.... Goes a long way at  explaining why European mtb'ers are so dominant, imo.

I'm just picturing a nice mile long course setup in Delta Park or even Albert's Farm. Botanical Gardens will also work. Great spectator sport.
