Sad - the greatest legend of SA cricket. I have followed his career from the start. I was hoping he would get to 300 wickets before he retires. He can still get 8 sticks in Durban....

Kallis, what can one say!

Haven't seen visuals but read somewhere there is 90k Aussies packed into the MCC for a dead rubber ashes test. Them sheep shaggers just want to rub salt in the poms' wounds (not that we mind). But really 90k???? Quite special!!

Great support by the Aussies. Durbs should get at least 15k in today (about 10k more than any day on the Wanders) and if Newlands were allowed to say goodbye to their favorite son, it probably would have reached the 25 000 capacity for the first 3 days of the test.

It is time yeah for living legend to lay down the bat and ball.

Having his name out of the top XI will take a long time to adjust to.

What a player!

How do you replace him! Its only possible if you put two world class players in the same spot... (against the rules that)

Can never ever replace a legend.

Time for SA Cricket to start with a clean slate in the all-rounder department and see who's there.

Wtf is up with the pitch? The only logic behind that grassless brow strip is a big bribe by the BCCI to the groundsman,

Weird

Really strange

It's unlikely we'll get another player who could fill the role kallis did, no point trying to pigeon hole someone into his slot.

There was a period in the late nineties when kallis, McMillan, klusener and (sort of) hansie played in the same 11 as all rounders of varying levels. Didn't guarantee success at all.

The king

I remember watching Kallis come on the field as the 12th man before he made his debut, can't believe he is retiring.

He will definitely go down as one of crickets legends!!

Is AB going to bat in JK's spot and still be the glove man or does this open the door for another wicket keeper to come in ?

My guess would be that AB goes to 4 and Tsolikele comes in as WK.

Some rumours and speculation are doing the rounds that the whole issue about Lorgat & co forcing Tsolikile into the team had something to do with Kallis' retirement. I dont think QdK will get a chance in the test setup as long as Tsolikile plays. I would like to see QdK come in at 5 or 6.

why the hell is Taahir not playing? before anyone points at his last match stats, on a pitch which favored fast bowlers i must add, but take at look at world #1 (now #2) bowler's stats.. *ahem*

anyway, the man has a stupid amount of talent, and he might be going through a phase just like warne did back when he started out:

from wikipedia:

Early international career (1992–1993)

Warne had an undistinguished Test debut when called into the Australian team in January 1992 for a Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He took 1/150 (Ravi Shastri caught by Dean Jones for 206) off 45 overs. He took 0/78 in the fourth Test in Adelaide, recording overall figures of 1/228 for the series, and was dropped for the fifth Test on the pace-friendly WACA Ground in Perth. His poor form continued in the first innings against Sri Lanka at Colombo, in which he recorded 0/107. However, a spell of 3/11 in the second innings precipitated the hosts' second innings collapse and contributed to a remarkable Australian win.

However, Warne's performances in the last two Tests in Sri Lanka were not to the satisfaction of the selectors, and he was dropped for the First Test against the West Indies in the 1992–93 Australian season. Greg Matthews played in Warne's place and despite Australia being in a strong position on the final day, was unable to dismiss the tourists on a turning surface. Warne was thus recalled for the Second Test in Melbourne, where he took 7/52 in a match-winning performance in the second innings.

selecting and dropping him at the first sign of failure is not the way to build confidence in a player, especially if the pitch is not conducive to any kind of spin. The kingsmead pitch however, could prove lethal. but no. not selected..

Kallis is definitely a Batting all rounder. The past 4 years his bowling wasn't world class.

They have a few options.....

Replace Kallis with Elgar (shuffle Faf/Duminy to 4 maybe?). We really need more left handers in the team especially against Aus.

This however could cause a shortage of bowling especially when our 3 front line bowlers don't fire or when we tour the subcontinent...........

We really need a world class spinner....

We can bring in McLaren as a bowling all rounder but who do we then leave out? (currently I would leave Peterson / Tahir out) - but this will now put pressure on our overrates as we then don't have a spinner (I don't rate Duminy)

The other option is to have Vern work really hard on his batting and then we choose 5 specialist bowlers....

I really dont see AB giving up the gloves at this stage. Thami too old and frankly not that good....

We have a few very real problems to sort out......

1. Find a spinner (and a good one at that)

2. Find 2 world class openers (as Smith will also retire soon and Petersen is not the long term solution)

3. Find balance
