Glad I was on the road from Pta to Oudshoorn last evening, else I would have been watching. Sounds like we threw it away bowling so many extras. Those bouncers going over the batsman and keeper, eish. I see Tahir did not go for a single boundary, which is superb given the context. Perhaps our selectors wonder if they should have chosen 2 specialist spinners a la NZ.

With the talk of extras - wides basically, isnt that a product of the pressure produced by the batsmen attacking and the bowlers looking to keep the ball away from them?

Yes and no. Remember that at night at some venues the amount of dew that occurs can hamper the fielding side. The dew makes ball wet which means it becomes difficult to handle and control. In all honesty the dew factor shouldn't have mattered much as almost all of our bowlers have played in India before and should've been aware of it. Additionally a number of our venues also has dew issues in particular places like Newlands and St George's to name two. All that being said your batsmen did put our bowling under pressure with their aggressive intent and profited neatly from the poor bowling that it resulted in. Root in particular was good in punishing anything loose and made our highly rated bowling unit look ordinary. As did Hales and Roy who set it up nicely for Root to take you close to the line. Ali finished it despite the rest of the lower order wanting to self destruct.

Personally I wonder concerning the field placings and the tactics used with and by each individual bowler. Abbott must not become reliant on the short ball to have a dot ball in his over. In fact a number of his extras/wides came as a direct result of a misuse of his bouncer and him not controlling it well.

Also, I wonder about Steyn vs Morkel, did they go with the right option?

Whoa, I see Shahzad saying that he loves playing Dale Steyn and Steyn is not dangerous. I think his statement is correct in this case, but it is a reckless thing to say to the press - he might face Steyn again some time, on a different pitch. It makes me think of the captain if the UAE facing AD without a helmet long ago - looking for trouble

I think Steyn is past his sell by date.  Might as well look for a job as bowling coach now.
