Pretorius had an off day, which is going to happen, he is still young.

Thirdly, with the game situation being what it was after we got bowled out, by tea yesterday it should have been obvious that we will have to rethink our tactics. In my view we should have started to throttle the poms, give them no runs, play boring cricket by bowling maiden after maiden after maiden. This does 2 things, it makes it more difficult for them to accelerate their innings allowing them more time to bowl at us in the 4th innings, and it also keeps us in the game because they are not running away with it which is what we saw happen last night and this morning. this tactic could frustrate them into making mistakes as they are clearly very keen to win this test match because they are trailing 1-0 in the series.

So I don't know, sometimes I wonder how the seemingly obvious goes amiss like that, even with all the experts and legends now in charge. possibly it doesn't go amiss and it is just down to poor execution??? or maybe its just me...

Pretorius not that young, almost 31. made his 1st class debut in 2011 and has impressive bat/bowl average of 38/23 (yes i got those right way round). Sheer stats he should be a shoe in for the team, but a LOT of his cricket is in the 2nd tier 3day stuff, which doesn't really count as st class in my mind - this is actually only his second FC game at newlands after being a pro for 10years!

dunno what their gameplan was in bowling, but england did not seem bothered.  Seems to have been a mildly sporting declaration by Root. current odds on result eng:draw:SA  21/2:7/1:2/9  equates to about 74:25:0.5 in percent

SA start second innings. All out for 96 first innings.

replying to this OP...why?

secondly started looking at stats, and put together the raw 1st class averages of our test "allrounders" since readmission. could maybe have done test averages but not all players have played enough to get a feel. some have also played county cricket which will skew it. either way, shows how streets ahead JK was.

1st class averages (ie. not test cricket)
player  bat/bowl

Kuiper 32/29
hansie  43/34

tough 1 but probably was out!?

still decent start by SA with Malan getting his maiden test 50. Lets hope him and Hamza can see things till close of play.

Fair point about Dwaine, somehow i confused him with Wihan Mulder. In my defence he is young in terms of international cricket. My bad, Shebeen you have outplayed me today ????

JK is the King. He was such a huge player for us its scary!

Im just taking the Mickey. Scooter was class, pure talent! But he had a reputation around club cricket specifically, and then of course his famous comment after the 438 victory.

not convinced by the Elgar dismissal. I think england got lucky here, as Reiffel probably gave it out on the sound from bat on ground, and doubt england would have reviewed if not out with only one review left.

same thing happened to Joe Root in the Ashes a few years back, and they were not happy!....https://archive.siasat.com/news/drs-controversy-hits-ashes-series-snicko-hotspot-fail-joe-root-515258/

I know the snicko/ultra edge is supposed to be a spike, and the murmur seen was not much of a spike, could have been elbow on pad - I wonder how much training the 3rd umpires have. always harder with spinners too when the keeper is standing up. BUT at the end of the day, this is a tight call, and benefit to the batsman doesn't apply anymore. The whole system has improved to a point where we now debate over tight calls but the obvious howlers have been eliminated - we can be thankful for that.

it's going to be a riveting day's cricket. glued to my iphone, except the sound is muted when KP comes on - oh my woollie sack he is annoying...

Yeah. He was hugely annoying as a player, and somehow as a commentator upped those levels
