Has anyone walked or ridden the hiking trail from below the mast to Silvermine?

How ridable is it?

It just seems such a waste of altitude to slog all the way up there and boringly ride down on the tar again...

Dude, if you ride that I will personally kick your arse. A literal horde of mtb'ers will be waiting in the wings for when I eventually tire out.

You will be sacrificing all that AMARider and co have been striving to achieve for us on the mountain, and potentially ban all building, riding and maintenance on the MTB trails in Tokai / Table Mountain.

Ride ONLY on the demarcated trails, and then in the indicated direction. Do not ride ANYTHING that even looks like it is a hiking trail, is signposted as such, or is not signposted as an MTB trail.

I will personally take over when Mayhem gets too tired, and I have stamina like you cannot believe!

Chill dudes... just inquiring. At least i asked. No need to threaten violence etc. I'm new to the CT scene and a simple "its illegal and would derail MTB initiatives" would suffice! A bit aggro me thinks - a bit like the capetonian drivers...

No worries man, welcome to C.T - sensitive issue, but I agree, no need for the over agro responses.

Ah.. Capetonian Drivers... Nothing compared to Durban drivers...

Dude, reason for the aggro is that the relationship is a very sensitive one, and has been threatened in the (very recent) past by unofficial trails, illegal building etc etc. It's gotten to a point at which one has to be openly aggressive to anyone who threatens the sustainability of the trails, as the common Joe Soap does not understand diplomacy and conversational tones.

Yes, it would be fantastic to have an alternative route down to Silvermine. But under no circumstances should people even begin to think about riding unmarked trails, particularly in Tokai / TMNP area. They're our trails, and they could be taken away at any point in time if stuff like that happens...

Yes - the reply was aggressive. But it seemed from your post that you were familiar with the Tokai MTB area, and as such knew that the trail in question was a running/hiking only piece of track.

Peace...

Dear Tokai regulars

I am in CPT every 2nd week & want to ride Tokai during the weeks I am there. Will appreciate some advise:

- what times during the week the trials are open, morning & afternoon?

- do I need to first get a permit or something to ride there or does one just pitch & ride

- does same apply to hiking?

Much appreciated

They are open from about 7am till 6pm (That's an indication) I don't know the actual time but i've been there as early as 6am and people ride at night all the time.

You pay for a day permit at the picnic area entrance. it's on the right hand side of the road leading up to tokai about 500m from the manor house. It's R30. You can buy a wildcard. That's R280 per anum.

I think hiking is free. Just don't ride on the hiking trails.

Yep. Hiking is free... I think the day-pass price has gone up to R 35 recently, which makes the wildcard beneficial if you go more than 8 times. It's a no-brainer, really.

For the wildcard - get yourself over to Westlake Office Park. The SANParks offices are in the block just next to the traffic lights, and you can get the wildcard from them...
