This is getting bad!

I was hit by a car 3 years back and the b@astard drove away, I woke up 4 days later in ICU with head injuries and a badly bruised knee, shoulder and elbow. I needed to get plastic surgery on face....worst part for me to get over was the fact that a human can cause the accident and drive away.

Hope this driver gets his ass handed to him

the vehicles number plate came off and was with the mangled bikes. the police have the details.

The girl has head injuries, but she was concious and seemed like there is no permanent brain injury.. lets hope. Charlie, is sore all over and is being x rayed now, he was on his feet at the scene.

Sad thing is that new cars the number plate get poprivited onto a aluminium plate that gets bolted on, so in future if there is a hit and run the numberplate will not fall of which sucks!

I was thinking the same thing!

I think we must get some form of petition and send it to AA or whoever just to show that it actually will helps if the number plate falls off.

Will the presence of the number plate be enough to place the driver at the car at the scene of the accident?

well im sure if acted upon quick enough the damage to the persons car and lack of number plate will sort that out.

at least it gives a possible lead rather than nothing at all

I'm hoping so.

Also willing to bet there will be a stolen or hijacked report.

It's a starting point, but not in itself enough. Once you got the vehicle, then it's a case of checking for damage to the vehicle; damage to vehicle + number plate = arrest :)

and with arrest comes bail (and the inevitable backlash of "why is he getting bail?") since bail itself cannot be used as a form of punishment and if the driver has a fixed abode with a job, he'll not be considered a flight risk (taking into account of course overcrowded jails) and will get bail - no point in getting upset about it.

I spoke to someone a few minutes ago and it seems there's already progress been made.

Yeah, I've seen the wheels of justice at work.

Great news. Keep us updated, please.

Thank goodness they are o'k.What really gets me is this person tried to get away. They have the plate = driver = owner/responsible person. How can this possibly be swept under the carpet? With all the unfortunate cycling carnage at the moment I feel we should have the responsible persons guts. Nail the bastard/s while there is proof. We cannot have him/her for culpable homicide but driving away from the scene is worth followin up and worthy of serious punishment. (Lynch the bastard/s - find out home address etc)I am so peed off about this! I think we should all rally around in whatever way we can. Attend court, legal fees etc.. I have no idea what to do but I am prepared to help wherever to see this moron charged and pay for his cowardliness.Sure there is something which can be done? It was a Hit and Run after all.

Glad to hear they seem ok - too much of this kind of thing happening nowadays. Fair enough it might have been an accident for whatever reason, but to flee the scene is despicable. Probably the usual unlicenced/ drunk, etc. Hope the coward rots in hell

It wont get swept under the carpet. A case has been opened and will get investigated. But remember cops aren't superhuman, just having a number plate isn't enough; the driver could (and would) just say it dropped off at some other time, how would you prove otherwise? If the vehicle has some damage that is consistent with the accident, then all you can say for sure is that the vehicle was involved, then you got to get a driver. How do you prove someone was behind the wheel of a car at a specific time? Hopefully there'll be some witnesses or the guy will be wracked with guilt and just hand himself over.

The best way to help is to keep it alive, as in constantly phone the newspapers for progress results and hopefully the press will pester the cops to keep momentum going. One good thing is the detectives in Pinetown have always been pretty damn good, with a good relationship with the taxi associations (if it was a taxi involved) and will put their all into getting a result.

Seems one of our team members have been hit in the Polokwane area as well yesterday. Not someone I know personally. He is ok but seems to have serious injury to the knee.
