Hi all,

My chain is slipping. :(

I'm riding an '06 Trek Remedy frame.

A new '08 XT jockey was fitted two months ago. At the same time, the shop checked over the cassette and chain and told me they were in excellent condition.

I ride mostly trials-type stuff and technical offroad sections. I do push the bike to the max.

It doesn't get ridden much...2/3 times a week to work [15kms each way], and perhaps a few kms on the w'end.

The last 3 weeks or so it's developed a slip in the chain.

There are no stiff joints in the chain, the chainline is straight with my selections, it's oiled every two rides with some decent stuff - forget the name; lbs recommended (oil, not wax), and the chainrings appear straight to me. While not new, there teeth front and back are far from triangular.

It's been a few days since I've ridden, so I can't remember distinctly if it's across the range or not, but it's *usually* only on the one set of gears I ride.

I've been out of bikes for quite a few years, so my knowledge is lost in the mists of time...what else can I check? :(

27-speed. All Shimano.

Anyone?

I have the same problem with my Gary when pushing it to the max on up hills.  Please help me as well.  I am going out this weekend...

There can only be a few reasons for chain slip. You need to work thru them progressively till the problem is solved.

1. Stretched chain

2. Worn cogs

3. Bent / twisted hanger

4. Damaged misaligned rear derailleur

5. Bent frame / chainstays (highly unlikley)

6. Incorrect cable tension.

I am no mechanic so I am sure there maybe other factors.

I had the same problem. When I took the bike to another LBS they found my rear cogs were worn. My previous LBS had told me they were fine so get a second opinion.

Might be a worn middle chain ring. Combined with a chain that is less worn it spells troube. The middle blade is used most often, and wears down fastest.

Take it to Mike and Jason at Mike's in Greenside and they will tell you.

Quicker and cheaper than trying out all the alternatives.........Wink

Hi guys' date='

Thanks all for the help.

Rob,

Took the bike to Fritz Pienaar [Paulshof'] twice, before going through to Kyalami...FPZ SUCKS, and plenty of Kudos to Kyalami for their helpy way above and beyond.

The cassette and chain are definately in good nic, and while the chainrings are starting to wear, I'm pretty sure thay are still far from causing issues.

Not a chance the frame is bent.

The hangar was bent, but was straightened with the right tool - name unknown - at Kyalami, who also fitted a new jockey. The old one was definately at the end of it's Life. ;)

Pretty certain the cables are all in good working order. Everything shifts perfectly. ;)

The general consensus then, which I tend to agree with now, is the freehub.

I'll get a quote on decent chainrings and a freehub in the new year. Hope Santa brings me a bankload of cash to service all my debts! :o :D

Cheers, Nic
