OK, you want to play.

If this is true, then we need to know what the event is, and who this friend is. I know a lot of event organisers, even big 'prestige' event organisers, and, while there is a living to be made, not one of them can sit on their bums for a full year from the proceeds of one. Not even the Epic.

Can you back up your claim?

R.E.A.D. my post - " it's so lucrative, she doesn't have to work at all above and beyond that."

how do you get from my post that she "sits on [her] bum for a full year from the proceeds"?

she works her arse off before and during, yes, but the proceeds of one race covers her years' earnings comfortably , which is why she decided to take on a few more, because she has the time. i don't have to back up anything, i know that i'm telling the truth and that's good enough for me.

One of the current discussions is around the fact that mtb events appear to be not well supported.

In light of this, I'm keen to hear how race organisers make these huge profits, as alleged by our friends.

Race entry - R150 x 300 entrants = R45 000

After costs deducted, i can't imagine much left in the pot.

Now I'd be interested to know the man hours required to put the race together and to manage the event on race day - I doubt very much so that there's much left in the pot.................

I just entered the Pnp MTB Challenge on Sunday 65km ride. Cost = R180. Its the same route as day 3 of the grape escape. Cost of the Grape escape = R2 450. So basically the first 2 days are costing R 1 100 each. Doesnt make sense to me why they charge so much for this race. Am i missing something here??

So who's a sucker then??

Yet...

she has now decided to stage another two per year because there is an unlimited amount of suckers out there who are willing to throw cash at her races.

So, she works her arse off to provide a race for suckers? Why are they suckers? Is it a crap event? Is it overpriced? Your friend's a rip-off artist?

from the OP the cost of a grape escape entry is R2450.

so using your estimate of 300 entrants the pot goes up to = R735 000

please, look me in the eye and tell me it costs three quarters of a million Rand, or R245 000 per day (by the same estimate), to herd a bunch of riders around the same course that the PnP MTB challenge does for R54 000 per day?

someone somewhere is making a LOT of money!

that's right, stick your head in the sand. just because you refuse to believe it doesn't make it untrue.

Sorry man but this is also very hard for me to believe, Advendurance stages the biggest MTB races on the calender with the MTN series and the NIssan Series in the Northern Area, if your statement was true then Fritz Pienaar and co would be a multi millionairs and could have kept all his shops. It has been proven numerous times without a sponsor an event means jack **** and can't be staged properly

Wouldn't we all just love to know what the organisers make from a race!? It's like asking someone you meet for the first time what they earn. It's a personal question and would make you feel uncomfortable if you were asked how much profit your company makes.

I run my business (because it's my passion) to make a profit. Why should a race organiser (Day or Stage) do it for a loss?

There are so many races to choose from, if the one is too expensive, skip a week and do the next one.

So the Grape Escape exposes itself when you look at the Day race cost and put it into the Stage Race context. That's their dumb luck. So don't enter and move on. They will learn soon enough. The whole event almost doubled in price from last year, enough reason to give it a miss.

"Pnp MTB Challenge on Sunday 65km ride"

Sorry shoulve been more specific. The Pnp MTB argus challenge is on the same weekend as the grape escape its organised by the same people and the day 3 is the same route. My point is the GE costs 2450 and the MTb argus 65km which is the same as day 3 costs 180. My point is why dies the Ge cost so much as its a self catered for event amd you basically paying R 850 a day ride

It costs about R15000 to hold a dh race here in cape town. That covers medics( R350 per hour!) Toilets, shuttles, timing, setting up the course and clearing it after, etc etc. At R250 per entry X 60 riders you only break even.
