Hi Hubbers,

You've probably already seen the "Like This" button next to forum posts which was (quietly) activated yesterday.

Most will be very familiar with Like / Thumb up / +1 buttons from various other social sites.

Much like Facebook's Like system, this one is positive only i.e. You can only "like" (+1) content and not "dislike" (-1) it.

It's been implemented as positive only purposefully. While it has some drawbacks, allowing negative (dislike) has proven to introduce numerous problems on many other social sites.

So how does it work?

Simple - if you like a post or other content simply hit the "Like This" button. Your name will appear next to the button along with any others who've liked it.

If you decide you don't like it or hit the button by mistake, just hit "Unlike".

How does it help?

  • Ease of use: Instead of replying with just a +1 or "I agree" you could hit the "Like This" button. It's quicker and cleans up the flow of the topic.
  • Ranking content: Likes serve as another means to rank content. Previously we've only had topic views and replies as method of ranking content.
  • User reputation: When people like your content it adds your reputation score. As with content, this is another means to rank users beyond just their post count.

Where to next?

Soon we'll able to use this like data to put meaningful lists of content together e.g. Most liked post / thread today or in the last week. Users with the most likes today, this week, this month and more.

So if you like something hit the "Like This" button!

Yep, that's the reputation score - just a count of all likes your content has received.

what about a "I Hate" button... thats a thing we really need... not so much on here, but it might be interesting.

Yeah, for those really out of line remarks that do not contribute to the OP's topic
