This thread is like a keg of gunpowder in a fire works factory...

Aren't fireworks made from gunpowder?

Sure.

And this thread will likely pick up some sparks and explosions when some folks get back to their PCs on Monday.

IMHO, the only way for us to gain the respect of motorists is by steadfastly obeying the rules of the road... stop at traffic lights and intersections, use hand signals, cycle in single file whenever possible etc.

Sure, many motorists don't obey the rules either, but the pot-calling-the-kettle-black argument has never been of any use... Dedicated cycle lanes outside of the big cities are still a very distant reality so cyclists and motorists will have to share the road for a long time to come.

Just this morning I was berated and given "the finger" by a fellow cyclist for stopping at a red traffic light... Unfortunately it is such nincompoops who give us all a bad name. Sometimes a wave and thanks-for-waiting-for-me-to-pass does the world of good.
