is garmin connect not exactly the same?

Garmin has a local Training Center package that lets you offload and save without an internet connection (not 100% sure if that's what you meant)

Garmin connect is a website. http://connect.garmin.com

All the web based tracking solutions would require you to be connected to the interwebs if you want to upload the data to them...

However, to download to the PC you just plug the Edge 800 in, browse the device which comes up as a removable drive & copy/open the file with whatever other software you use (SportTracks comes to mind...)

Where is your usb ant stick?

Edge 800 does not transfer data wirelessly via the USB stick. This to the dismay of all Edge 800 users worldwide. The newer versions of Garmin Ant Agent does however pick up the Edge if you plug it in. For me it is easier & faster to open the GarminActivities folder on the unit, and select the .fit file(s) manually.

I got an ANT stick with my ForeRunner 405 and it works perfectly for transferring data to/from that ;)

CORRECTION

Bryton also uses ANT+ for HR strap and powermeter

Proves my point about the user interface on their units, I could not find it! ;)

Garmin Edge 500 & 800 uses the .FIT file system. FIT files can be directly uploaded to many programs off-line, my favourite being SportTracks and many online too. Its quite easy to convert FIT files to the more commonly used GPX files.

Not sure what file system the Bryton uses?

What is the price difference between the two units?

wanted to know myself, as garmin have been laughing to the bank for far too long in this game. about bloody time someone else came in and gave them a run for their money. My prediction is that this industry will move to a price war as the hardware is now pretty much understood, we'll all win there thank you. if a stripped down android unit comes in then it's a real race to the bottom.

it appears the 50 compares straighter to the edge 705, but that is no longer available.

bryton 50

from their online store

R3199

but the bryton 50 comes with maps pre loaded(not sure how decent they are). garmap is R1299 for sa topo. yip, that's the price without the tub of vaseline. maps all paid for by our tax money and then 'converted' to their format.

just for reference, at wiggle.co.uk

bryton 50 - £141.64 - ~R1700 pre tax/shipping etc. - way cheaper than local ballistic bike trading price

garmin edge 800 - £262.49 - R3156 per tax/shipping etc. - similar to local price

The Bundle includes HeartRate stap + speed/cadence sensor.

If bought separately the HR would be around R800 and the Speed/Cadence R550, buy the bundle, much cheaper that way

Edge 800 is only the head unit.

Performance bundle adds HR strap and speed/cadence sensor.

Performance and Mapping bundle adds maps to that.

So an update: After I posed the question.I took the advice and complained to garmin who offered me an upgraded to 500 for R749-00 which I was okay with but I asked for an upgrade to an 800 and they said sure - for the bundle R2149. So I am now charging my new Garmin 800.

FWIW: There seems to be more support on more forums for Garmin so I decided to stick with that. Bryton may be good but you need a degree in map formats to even start understanding what you cna and cant load on the device. Next purchase will likely be the topo maps and that will be me and my bundle.

Thanks for all the infomratoin - may post a request for a bit of help in loading free maps...

I have a number of Garmin's but I have never seen a Bryton, actually until I saw an ad here I think, I didnt even know of them, but never the less, I wondered, do's a Bryton have features that Garmin do's not, (ie) unique features that could distinguish it from the pack?. Or is it really just a sort of generic unit.
