All airlines have tightened up on excess baggage, just go prepared. Do your home work, Cut down on the kuk you normally pack - after all what is the priority here? Pack all the heavy items into small backpack which you can take on board and is often not weighed. Note: do not take tools or spares or liquids in hang luggage, big problem. Pre-pay/buy excess, its often cheaper. Sometimes they will let an extra 5 kg's go, sometimes not. Pot luck. Make an effort to be nice about it.

Last time I flew to CT with a bike, 1Time were very co-operative. Personally I don't like Kulula and avoid flying with them. All that silliness gets to me

Last year I flew to Phlippines with mtb (18 Kgs all in), found out they give extra 10 Kg's Scuba allowance so cunning made use of that. But it had to be pre-authorised.

Oh, and don't try fly with CO2 bombs pack in your bike. Most Airports now XRay bikes.

It is weird that you would have to "lie" to transport equipment... is there anyone here who actually works for ACSA... I would like to know first hand...

Do airlines know that certain Sporting codes travel more and so charge less... is that not just as politically uncorrect as discriminating against skinny-fat, black-green-orange-white-yellow(PC... all colors were in alphabetical order so as not to offend anyone)...

if it is about weight... then spread the cost as it is measured...

Oh I just remembered this from one of my previous flights . . .

Came here with a bike in a bag (road bike) - no problems. Wanted to return with an EMPTY bike bag - had to pay excess baggage. If there isn't a bike in it, it's just another suitcase! Came back again with another bike in a bag - no problems.

In order to get the empty bike bag on board I had to pay half the excess weight to the airline and put a one hundred rand note in my passport at the check-in desk . . . . common practice here apparently?

Imagine if 6 check-in ladies all did that to 20 passengers? The weight figures handed to the crew would be nonsense . . . . :-o

Are you talking International flights?

Kulula rocks!

Get yourself organised beforehand

1.Book online.

2.You get 1 bag free(up to 20Kg)If the bike fits in to that its free

3.You pay for an additional bag

4.Pay for your extra bag on line and save about 35%.Never fails and never had a hassle

You ous are just piss poor organised

Just remember that during an event like Argus different rules might apply due to the huge amount of extra bags

I don't think there is anything like a 'sporting allowance' anymore, although baggage policies vary from airline to airline. You find a lot of pro's bitching about this now in their blogs etc. Takes some careful planning. Preparation pays off. As for my 'scuba allowance' I did take scuba kit as well on a trip to Phils, took heavy bits as hand luggage. Total: 30 Kgs (pedal spanner in hand luggage caused a problem on one leg)

Horses for courses, but I would rather drive to Cape Town that endure a Kulala flght and all that comes with it, 1Time is decent no frills down to earth service.

So alphabetised discrimination is ok is it? :P Explains why black people have it so tough hey hehehe

I agree with the idea that giving passengers a total weight allowance (body weight + baggage) is fair but what about the practical implications? Each person on every flight would need to be weighed before boarding! Self-concious fat guys would hold up the queues cos they're waiting to be helped by the guy at counter 3 instead of the hot chick at the next available counter who will frown at the 'excess baggage'! We'd have to spend so much extra time at airports. The emergence of baggage mules will bring destruction to communities of midgets the world over!

I think for now we will just have to bite the bullet and pay until a standard solution which works efficiently is found?

kulula sucks its the worst airline i have travelled with my first and last.

their staff need to be trained to be more considered to their clients.

i had very bad experience with them, last plane to cape town halve empty i was 2min. late people was still standing in que to board they would not let me in.besides that the plane was also delayed i had to overnight on airport, but if their flights are delayed you just have to accept.they and there staff sucks bigtime oh sorry was the reply companies policy if you 2 min late you cant board even if the plane is delayed.

Flew from Cpt to Whk for the Desert Dash in December and had to pay R 200 for my bike to be transported. I thought I would save myself some hassle and pay the R 200 for the return transportation from Walvis Bay to Cpt (just in case the guy on the ground in Walvis decides another rate applies). Good thing the Air Namibia lady at Cpt Airport would not let me pay for the return leg, because there was no charge on the way back. Just goes to show how willy nilly these regulations are.

On an Emirates flight you may take a box up to 3m long and hand it in as check-in luggage. Took a Patio Umbrella over for a friend like that and it cost me zip.

on their website they say if you can fit everything in your bike box and it is under 20kg's its FREE????

The total luggage allowance is one bag of 20kg. If your bike weighs 20kg and everything else is hand luggage, your bike will be free.

If your suitcase weighs 10kg and your bike weighs 20kg, you will pay for 20kg of extra luggage.

You can pre-book excess baggage at reduced rates online.

I have no problems with Kulula's baggage policies. I have big problems with their inability to land any flight on time (15min late was the closest they've come for me).

Then do not fly on regional flights in Nigeria

The extra for the bikes is a surcharge for irregular shape, not mass Related. Those that whine they are being "conned" go and check the dimensions allowed by the airlines. Bikes do not fit on the regular mechanised

Loading and sorting systems. They have to be loded by hand, and that is what you pay for.

Ok I accept that there would be a charge for a human being packing the bike box...

mmm...perhaps they should also charge for passenger assistance onto and off the plane... That is more labour-intensive/cost-to-company-per-hour than the packing and unpacking of a bike by an under-paid blue collar worker...

There seems to be a fine line between business and PC....

I guess in an ideal world models would fly for free even though their baggage would be 5 times their weight... and my "hairless skinny little runt" will be seen as FAT!!

Do your homework beforehand. Phone the airlines and ask about sports equipment if you are too lazy to read through the luggage policy on the website. You could have saved yourself R200 if you simply pre booked your bikes.

Then they will not have anything to moan and whinge about
