it is already eating at me !!

its more than a year away - that is enough time to train ...... only do the argus 15 or so times .. in a row .... at 12 kph

Assuming you don't sleep for 5 days!!

And do you know how much trouble there is in our house about getting in training rides that aren't enough really for ONE of those Arguses?? Oh well, like you said, it's a year away. Who knows what we can achieve in that much time! (divorce??? more subterfuge around 'stolen' rides?? BOTH of us riding???)

From the AudaxUK website, the suggested training plan for LEL 2013...

Here is a suggested ‘training pattern’:

January: 2x 100km events

February: 1x 100km & 1x 200km

March: 2x 200km

April: 1x 300km, 1x 400km

May: 1x200km 1x 600km

June: 2x 200km, 1x600km

July: 1x 200km + LEL 1400km

It is not necessary to ride very long distances every weekend. It is wise to have an easier weekend from time to time, especially in the two weeks before LEL itself. If you follow a plan roughly like this outline, you should manage LEL without any problems.

Who's keen??

!! Nuts!

But LEL doesn't have to be like PBP -rather 280km a day for 5 days. So you could actually split it up a bit??

Ok, who am I fooling!

If you're in/near Gauteng I'd drop a line to Eddie (email earlier in this thread), and if WC based then contact Anthony (user name pbp2007 on these forums).

You should find some organised audax rides to help with that training schedule.

Your average speed is only slightly less for LEL - PBP is 1230km in 90hrs, LEL is 1400km over 5 days, so although you get to go a bit slower (maybe) you have to do an extra Argus and a half at the end ;)

Aside from fatigue, injury, sores etc the big challenge for either seems to be balancing riding time with need to sleep/eat, time at control points (more a PBP issue I'd guess with the larger number of entrants) etc etc

Thanks.

I am neither...but will still do so. Might be able to hook up with them somewhere. Can't possibly see getting through training like that on your own.

I have a 140-50km (solo) ride planned for next month and will see how that goes. These things sometimes go with the overwhelming urge to dispose of the bike, but I'm still here and in the meantime I will dream on! Plus there's all that crazy randoneurs' stuff here and on the web.

With you there.

I got bitten by the PBP bug around the end of last year - only recently struck me that LEL would be a good early test to see if I have what it takes, and have got a workable kit setup. Not many days go by when I don't do a bit of thinking / planning / training about these nice dreams.

LOL, only because you do it on your MTB underachiever!

Ha, ha. Must say, training for the Cape Pioneer Trek in Oct. If Eddie moves his 300 km to 1st week May, you will see the Mongoose again.

No brain, no pain...

Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no... now what... this is going to EAT at me, nibble nibble nibble away at every other excuse and drive me MAD.

Well, there are plenty others to keep you occupied even this year, especially in North America. The Seattle club is full of loonies, not only riding for days in the rain, but up and down the Rockies too!

Portugal has just started a randonneurs club, and Pedro Alvez ,who is leading it, has built up some nice routes along the coast and through the north of the country. That sounds like heavenly holiday potential to me! Furthermore, Portugal is not so hard on the pocket as some other potential destinations. He would be delighted to have some SA guests!

The more you look up the sport, the more you get eaten alive by all the international possibility!

LOL, the other madness was us trying to TT the last 100Km of the 300Km last year :)))))

Guy, just noticed, when did you move to Canada ?

Also, from you guys who have done the PBP, why is a 300km and then a 400km trip in one month so tricky ?

And is it feasible to be doing 280 km a day with some rest and sleep ?

As with gogo, this bug is nibbling away, and this would be a nice bucket list tick to do.

I haven't done any yet - but I get the impression there's more organization and thoughts to safety these days. Certainly correspondence I've had from Eddie and Anthony (@pbp2007) here in the cape gives me that impression. I know Anthony and the guys here are hoping to get a series of monthly Audax rides going again for those of us in WC who want to train for LEL and PBP

Okay, that's good news.

Okay, that's good news.

Didn't mean to dismiss your concerns BTW - sadly cycling in SA is way less safe than it should be, or we would like it. And I totally hear you in terms of choosing your times and routes when you cycle solo vs following a set route.

As you probably saw, I'm totally bitten by the PBP bug - which in practical terms means doing training and qualifying rides here in SA. I'm always nervous and cautious whenever I get on the bike though and head for the roads ....

In December slowbee

It's not so bad, I think it's just underachiever bemoaning having to ride his road bike for the 400Km rather than his MTB

280Km a day is fine, just get your aerobic base right - it takes more than a few months to get it sorted

C'mon slowbee, you've been talking about it for ages, even with R2R or the FC! I find paying for an event is the easiest way to commit to doing it!
