I see that list is growing by the day!!!

After stage one there was a lot of riders that did not start or finish. Pretty expensive if you pop R37 000 and only ride 2 days.

How do you manage to enter an event like this for that amount of $$$ and not be prepared enough?

I've entered events with all the necessary training and preparation and my experience during in the event was horrendous.

I think you are still allowed to ride, but won't get a medal at the end. Stuff happens... unknown route, mechanical issues, falling and hurting yourself, bonking. Maybe you are fit enough for one stage, but a couple in a row will take it's toll. It's a seriously tough race and quite something to just finish it.

To quote a mate of mine who's done the event more times than me - 'there's not so many people doing the epic any more who forgot to train..'

Every day of that race is unbelievably tough on you and your bike. There's 100 reasons that you might drop out.

I am not "mocking" the guys not finishing, to last only for 2 days? I do understand a mechanical that is real bad but maybe people underestimate the event?

It is a good question.

No real answer here, unless someone wants to "confess".

Last year somebody I know DNF'ed, he could've finished easily.

He had like 6 hours for 40km or something, just couldn't overcome the mental block.

But that was day 7...

That was also after a 9hr stage 1 after a broken derailleur...

Respect to Evans and George for carrying on, I might have thrown in the towel.

Yeah stuff **** stuff happens alright, we nearly did not make stg 1 cut off last year due to a timing chip error on the prologe and that combined with a bonk in the last 20k of stg 1... if we had a technical to add to the woes it woulda been over.... so easy...and then there was the swiss dude riding for Stockli Pro whose frame broke (snapped?), and dont forget KE fall.... So ja stuff it happens no matter how well you prepare.

For 37k I'm pretty sure I'd finish. I did Sani for free with no training and 2 weeks notice and I smashed every day as hard as my fat ass would let me. 37k and you know I'm training 20 hours a week for plenty months in advance. Anyone who spunks that much cash and doesn't prepare deserves some ridicule and a whole heap of pain.

Sure Swiss I guess there are some things you can't train for.. Maybe I'm just jealous of the peeps who are fine with spending the money and not putting the hours in. Personally I don't have that much cash to throw around.

Agree, its a waste to throw it away due to lack of training....

Another problem i think is that some people dont have experience with multi day events and get caught with nutrition issues, seriously bonk or get nausea after about 5-6 hrs of riding on empty...

I'm one of the 2012 DNFs. I spent the last 9 months training, often at the expense of spending time with my eight month old boy...committed to finishing to the extent of obsession, and came in, knowing I had the legs and lungs. Had to pull out, after 10 hours of vomit and sh*t spells on Tuesday night. Trust me, there is nothing more devastating than sitting on the side of the road, with nothing more to give...getting back in the saddle for 500m and repeating. Put that time (and yes, own money) in and you'll understand the feeling. Ironically, it's my boy that gave me the stomache virus. So yes, lots of reasons...but none of them I would guess would be "I thought it would be easy".
