I used to be a golf nut, then i semigrated to the Cape and went for a MTB ride once, then again and again and i havent been on the course for 4 years now, dont miss it much. What did it for me was one day after i started riding MTb i was playing a round of golf at erinvale and i looked up at the mountains and i thought i would rather be there then here. Never been back to a course since.

One positive though is that more middle-aged men seem to want to get fit and into shape, hence you see more of them on MTBs now. I see the same trend with Surfski paddling, most of the new entrants to the sport are middle-aged men that wants to get fit and at the same time get some release from the stress at the office.

I go for lessons at the Gary Player experience (world of golf)

My coach has explained that he will coach me only if i take an interest in the health of my body, and a large portion of my off course training is gym workouts and excercises to keep me fit and supple to be able to hit better.

Please bear in mind, i am not a pro or scratch golfer, just a social golfer looking at improving.

So a large emphasis in golf is now on golf fitness.

Have you seen some of the young guys on tour - they take fitness VERY seriously.

They helped me alot, first lesson I pitched with the big dog and was told to put it away and focussed for three lessons on scrambling, one on putting and one on irons / swing. Haven't shot over 83 since then and it helped me break 80 frequently now. Top guys...if you can stay away from the mats, they do nothing for your striking and feel

Yeah, i am not allowed to use the driver even when playing. Each time i go to the course, i drop a shot on my handicap.

Nope, but its a good thing for now.

Till i can control the thing properly, it just ruins my game, then i have to spend the next two shots recovering.

Lately i have been hitting a three wood off the tee about 240mt so i am quite happy with that.

I am not really worried about distance, more consistency and accuracy.

Lekker man, the guy that helped me was stephan spies...what a legend. What i really like about his style is that he gives you plenty drills to correct something. I would have the lesson at 5pm normally and then I would practise till dark. There is a little practise area next to the world of bunkers with grass around them that you can use for scrambling practise...I loved it

No. Road cycling is the new golf, the coffee stops, the Assos, the Sidi's, the Oakleys, comparing sub UCI limit halo bikes, titanium this, carbon that, Zipp, Hed, super record, power meters, wattage, Tour de France trips etc.... there is little of that in MTB.

It's slowing migrating to MTB too...
