Shin Scars + Spiky Pedals = The Never Ending Story

Recommended Posts

I have been riding bikes with spiky pedals for the last 20 odd years.

I have had many pedal spike to shin moments.

And the pedal hits virtually the exact same spot/scar everytime. I have re-opened the same scar on my left shin a good 10 or 12 times . Now I just need to mildly bump that scar on anything and it's blood dripping - its not a happy situation :(

I stopped using spiky pedals for a while cause I was so afraid of the spikes tearing me up any more, used some worn smooth mongoose junky pedals.

Then I got DMR V12 with giant spikes on a new bike which are awesome pedals , so I used shin guards but my feet never came off for months.

So I stopped using shin guards.

Today whilst popping little airs having some light hearted fun I landed badly , left foot off - BAMMM!!!! spike victoriously embedded dead center in the exact scar it always hits. It was so deep there was bleeding under the skin and the pooling blood made a mound....

Not good nor healthy I think for that to be happening repeatedly on the same scar.

Do I have to wear shin guards every time I ride just for that one slip up every 6 months?

I don't use clip-in pedals , neither will I start using them again - so that's not an option.

Is there any technique or something I can use apart from shin guards to protect my shins from further abuse?

I had this wake-up call the last time it happened and now its happened again. Ain't looking forward to wearing shin guards all the time from now on.....

Hitting your head against the wall over and over and expecting a different result every time?......wear the shin guards dammit!

Yes correct!!

But aren't there any other options?

I was in easy rider mode when it happened, no helmet , just having a little mid morning fun round the neighbourhood to loosen up and get a bit of fresh air.

I suppose its like wearing a seat belt , I always wear mine . I remember when I was in a car accident , right after we hit the car I looked over at my mate , he never wears his seat belt , blood pouring down his face/broken nose/neck messed - he head butted the windscreen & steering wheel , I just got whiplash :)

I reckon someone must invent a spiked shoe and a rubber pedal platform.....problem solved!

Here's the bloody evidence

Its almost as if the spike surgically impaled itself on my shin - it literally just punched straight through into deep meat. Aaahh nothing like lifting up a little flap of meat on your own body , you just know its gona take a while to heal .

Was strangely not very sore - I can remember having some mad scenes hopping around trying to stop the violent pain after pedal/shin altercations. Maybe I have damaged the tissue to such a degree that the nerve endings do not function anymore.

Used to get that "blood under the skin - make big purple ugly bag" in my rugby days...

With great embarrassment, I was advised by the Doc to wear shin-guards [as an aside - it is not pleasant having the blood drained by a syringe].

The jibes from the team-mates stopped when I showed them what big purple ugly bag look like. :P

Moral of story:

No shin-gaurd = pain.

Shin-gaurd = less so.

Good luck.

Dude!!!!!

I want to report that! :o

Put up a warning sign.

Or make it smaller.

Make it smaller.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[Ok. I'm over it. :) ]

That is the best idea ever - and so intuitive!

Excellento!

I can wrap my pedals in a rubber inner tube and fit sprinting spikes to my shoe soles.

How do I make it smaller , it just automagically went big when I posted it.

But maybe we need to see the brutality of it all so we can learn that spiky pedals are no laughing matter

Wahahaha

Was that from rugby studs , the guys from the other team "mistakenly" standing on you in the rucks?

My last encounter with a spiked/studded pedal. The wound at first was a cut made by studs on the pedal. I would normally just treat this myself by applying the usual mercurochrome, antiseptic ointment, etc. After about a week or 2 it wasn't getting any better went to the local pharmacy & the assistant behind the counter was clueless as he sold me some type of clear film plaster. Another 2 weeks later I started applying band aids which by then was way too late. Pas was oozing out of this wound with the most horrendous stench, this was a clear sign I had to go to the doctor, after enduring it for another week I decided enough is enough I can’t keep getting the bedding & my trousers dirty so off to the doctor I went. It turns out the wound was so deep, long & wide that I should've gotten stitches the day of the knock but in the past I use to just treat pedal knocks myself hence it was not seen as serious at the time. So because I left it too late the wound become infected & turned septic hence the pas & stench & it was too late to get stitches now. 2 weeks of antibiotics & the nurse changing my dressing every 2-3 days all was sorted but I would bear the scar for the rest of my life.

So no matter what, wear your shin guards & helmet cause playing around the neighbourhood is wear those freak accidents happen, even if you just popping down the road to the 7Eleven, do it, it’s the right thing to do.

I think I needed stitches on mine today - I could look inside my spike hole and it had a more than usual amount of depth to it.

But thanks for the graphic description and the encouragement to wear both my helmet and shin guards. I need to wake the kcuf up!!

A friend of mine got 14 stitches in his shin from his bmx beartrap pedal years ago. It looked like a long strip of steak hanging off his shin bone. I almost always wear shinpads and my feet almost never slip off . But there's always that one time...
