Based purely on what I've heard and not on personal experience, the SLR's will be the better ride, but the XTR's will be more reliable in the long term... The SLR's also have better resale value due to the "bling" factor they have over XTR's so easier/cheaper to upgrade before you have any maintenance issues!

So it sound slike the Mavic will need quite a bit of maintanance which im not really liking..............suppose living right next to the ocean also not going to help with the spokes and nipples.........suppose i have to take another look.......maybe a set of Eastons

no monster man. this is the hub: information is given mostly on a hear-say basis, and when factually, given without proper context. If more ppl ride Mavic, then yes, more likely faults will be found and thus proportionally, more will complain. Doesnt meant it's as bad as it sounds.

Despite the above, the choice is yours: all I'm saying is, take the bits of info without proper context with a pinch of salt. Two of us in this thread have given you quite abit of info ito our real world experiences with our mavics, and we not complaining. That's alot more valuable than hear-say.

Mavics are pricey, no doubt. The bling factor is high too: it's a gorgeous bit of kit. I'm sure eastons or other brand will be as reliable as Mavics, and cheaper too no doubt. You cant be faulted for going with more bang for your buck. But darn, these mavics are stunning! :P

Ok.

Older mavic wheelsets with the bladed spokes ran on a conventional nipple/spoke interface. Corrosion would take place as on most wheels at this junction and at a later stage when wheels are trued or spokes re tensioned you would find the the bladed spokes are "twisted".

Later models (can't recall from what year) have a insert in the nipples which do not react and corrode with the spokes. So when the spoke is tensioned the blade still runs straight.

Just check with a good lbs re the year model from when they did this.

From other riders they have only had god things to say about the mavic products used.

XTR though is also a very solid set of wheels.

I agree with everything Cap says about SLR's and Mavic. I've had 3 sets of SLR's over the years and now also have a set of SX's for AM bike. They really are the shizzle. Light, strong and looks great. The only teensy weensy complaint about the SLR's is that you will have to open the rear hub occasionally (+- every 1000km or so) and give it a bit of a cleaning and lube. It will take you (or the bike shop) 10 minutes.

I've owned two sets of SLR's the only issue I've had is that occasionally I had to remove the freebody and lube the rubber seal behind it. Really a two minute job. Otherwise no problems at all - light and super stiff. I wouldn't know about the nipples seizing because I've never needed to true one ever!

They're also great if you want to use non-tubeless tyres running tubeless. All the tyres I have tried fit snugly onto the rim with no burping.

Monsterman, you can get better in that price bracket...unless you have your heart set on the SLR and it's "red spoke technology"

Look at custom built wheels...what is your budget?

Why not something like easton's wheelsets? I think Johan B would advise you on a pair of these..?

Depends which model. Have had lots of issues with some hubs.
