pastapouch Posted April 24, 2012 Share WOW, I have about 9 k to cover but a bit scared, I would have to pass 2 squatter camps on the way - you guys inspire me!! We don't have any showers at work. NO alternative routes? I have a couple, no squatters, whats in my way on some is a couple of baby mountains.
LeTurbo Posted April 24, 2012 Share Are you scared of being bike mugged? Its a shame that is a deterrent. Carry Mace - either on the handlebars, crossbar, or there's one you can strap to your arm (Sportman's Warehouse, I think). I'd also ride when it's busier, more commuters, etc.
Bateleur1 Posted April 24, 2012 Share I commute as much as possible. But meetings and getting gets to appointments in the afternoon throws a spanner in the weels every now and then. Like this week, Mrs Batty is in Germany so now I am on my own.

Hairy Posted April 24, 2012 Share RE passing informal settlements. I recall having to walk past one when at school everyday (At this stage the particular one was having a fair bit of internal turmoil) and one would always have groups of guys hanging around at the entrances. One day a particular group I had seen before started throwing stones/bricks at me. The only rational thing I could think of at that stage was to simply throw the stones/bricks back at them. Following this the same group always greeted and there were no issues again .... I am glad it turned out a the way it did and never got nasty. Now I do not advocate the above, but just sharing a story. I think the bigger problem though is not having showers at the office!
Cav' Posted April 24, 2012 Share I would love to but doing 170km (Roundtrip) a day will not fly.
davetapson Posted April 24, 2012 Share Do my best to commute as much as poss. Drive in on Monday so I have a car to get to meetings etc, ride home, ride back to work etc. Drive home Friday pm. Generally take Weds pm off (and thus Thurs am as well, as if I dont' ride home, I can't ride to work) to catch up on chores that can only be done with a car on the way home. _freak_ Posted April 24, 2012 Share As often as possible, but usually about twice a week, very early in the morning if I commute to work, and early afternoon if I commute home, about 20km each way, I make it longer if I'm in the mood..."if I'm in the mood"....ROFL!!!
