Great day - perfect weather, wonderful views, big friendly crowd. Particularly enjoyed Hendrik Lemmer on the microphone at the start and finish. Only did the 25k route, but enjoyed riding through a couple of freezing rivers and lots of gnarly single track, which I survived with only a few bruises. It seemed more challenging than a lot of the KZN events - is it just me? Thanks to the PPA, sponsors and all concerned.

BTW, well done CatGirl! When I reached the start/halfway/finish point, I was very happy that I didn't still have 25k (and some serious climbing) ahead of me.

On the off chance that he sees it, I just want to say thanks to the kind man that gave me a gulp of his coke/water and his jungle bar. Probably saved me from rolling back down the mountain.

Nice race and weather just a few points they need to ponder.

1. The track is not best mantained when riding the first forest a few of us had to stop and find the track. Also some of the track is grown closed.

2. Single track is not flowing enough. Just going nice then you have to get off to go through some rocks.

3. The organisers knew it was going to be wet with river crossings why did the water points not have lube?

Otherwise a nice race with a good vibe. With a great acsent from the anouncer. :P

Yeah, the rocks certainly made the single-track entertaining! Lots of discussion at the back of the field about the word "technical".

And I'm interested to hear that someone else donated their chain-lube to the Steenbras Dam - I had a serious case of chain-suck, which made life interesting for me and the guy behind me. Note to self: use wet-lube next time. :cursing:

And thanks for opening up the track, Ceres - by the time we got there, it was pretty clear which way to go.

+1. I'm not sure whether it is old unmaintained single track, or brand new single track that hasn't been ridden in and is invisible with the pine needles, but a few of us ended up lost and found and lost and found. Also, at some other places the route markings were not great and we ended up turning around when someone comes from the front telling us we all went wrong. And some really dangerous spots weren't indicated.

Personally I don't mind the rocks and I enjoy the challenge, but the best bit of single track was the last bit up to the 25km point, nice and fast.

As always, great fun!

Super Super hectic!!! now that was a challenge! Also had bad luck with the chain suck. wasted a lot of time that way. BIG BIG up to the guy on the niner singlespeed, OMW, major respect dude!

I also noted another ss ride on a lynsky ss (Turns out it was the guy who sold me my on one ss frame)

Route was spectacular with amazing scenery.

ST was lots of fun. Correction it was HUGE FUN. Frankly I want to go back and do it again soon, this time on the Shova with gears.

I had no route marking issues fortunately, but took a decent tumble in into a rock strewn donga at high speed. I bunny hoped a log laying in the trail and just about landed in the donga.....feeling a little tender right now.

Chain lube...dude you knew it was raining prior to the ride why did you not bring your own along with you?

All in all a good tough ride and I look forward to doing it again next year.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, although I suffered due to mt unfit state! With regards to lube: When its wet, use WET lube and bring your own along! Definately saved the day for me.

This was my first & I'm not sure when will be my last, a definite must do on my annual Mtb calendar. Yeah getting lost sucked big time in that forest ST, luckily I think we only wasted 5mins before eventually finding the right path, but even that was fun, 20 odd guys riding around in circles,LOL!

With 6km to go on that steep rocky descent along the river I punctured while I was busy repairing I witness a guy fall & knocked his head on a rock, leaving him with a cut above his eye, I of course dropped everything & rushed over to see if I could help, luckily one of His mates wasnt too far behind & took over from there, I hope you ok bro & got stictches for that nasty cut.

That was my friend, he is ok, Managed to get down and complete the ride, Typical roadie had no business being on the MTN :) , ...it was a great ride one of the best on the calender, had it all singletrack, climbs technical and views that are hard to rival anywhere on earth.

Yesterday was my 5th attempt at this ride - every year it's hard... a broken chain in the first 15km's in that singetrack section through a burnt out forest was not nice, then a nice heavy "gat oor kop" fall made me a bit "gatvol" - but finished the 50k and had loads of fun... well done everyone involved.

Wow CatGirl can you come teach my wife how to wash and lube. :w00t:

Sounds like you're the mechanic for two bikes there, Ceres...

:D
