More is not better - its about focused conditioning. That 10,000 hours thing is a fallacy and scientifically proven crap! The sequence is

  1. determine your goal;
  2. determine your current status with respect to your goal; and
  3. design a project plan to get you there

We call that an individualized focused conditioning gap analysis. If someone has the luxury of time to do it differently, go for it, but it is not in line with top sport performance!

Not referring to anyone mentioned on this topic, its just the principal.

I think the one thing most overlook and sadly most people also regard as a fallacy, is the first thing to do.

Realise what your genetic inheritance is all about, if all things were equal there would be many Burry's and Jaroslav's running around.

Sadly , not all things are equal.

Very true. I have made peace with the fact that my age / knee problems and talent level will get met to mid-pack at best, at my fittest. Luckily I've also been blessed with loads of mental fitness and a never-give-up attitude.

A few years back we were doing a dullstroom training camp. I remember seeing about 5 guys all slip streaming The "Racing Raplh" all looking like they were battling to keep up. Put a huge smile on my face... testosterone at it best slowly failing

They say the harder I train, the luckier I get, but as I have followed numerous programs I have come to realize that this is so true.

Doesn’t matter how hard your train. It will only get you that far. I have made piece with being the 25% to 50% of the field.

Don’t get me wrong. Training programs do work and I have seen excellent results, but genetics is where the champions are @ -- (doesn’t that sound like an advert for cereal?)

1000% agreed! You can train a jersey cow as much as you like but she'll never win the July. But no race horse can give milk like she can ... its horses for courses. That is why we encourage riders to not only get stuck with XCM (marathon riding) but also try XCO (cross country). Crux is, if you can realize your potential, it is extremely rewarding when you perform according to that - if that implies a podium, great! If it implies coming in at number 100, also great!
