Zatek Posted June 4, 2012 Share Hi Hubbers Looking on what to upgrade next on my road bike. Currently I have a 2012 Merida Scultura Evo 904 (Carbon frmae, Shimano 105) and I have upgraded the wheels to Mavic Ksyriums Elite and saddle Selle Italia SLR Flow. What should I upgrade to and what?Wheels (Easton\Mavic\carbon\) or crankset (SRAM\FSA\Carbon) Budget not more than R10 000 and parts can be used. Thanks

Thanks Groupset.Get yourself a set of Sram Force, (comes with the crank) it's R8500.Or, If you can stretch yourself, a set of 2011 Sram Red, for R13500.Ultegra is also R8500. Getting campag will mean a new wheelset/freebody too, so not really an option. You'll struggle to find wheels lighter than the ksyriums without splashing out bigtime. You could always get an aero set, but for that price they will be on the heavy side. Get a nice groupset, test them out (Force and Ultegra) and see what you like. Just my opinion. Iwan Kemp Posted June 4, 2012 Share Lighter wheels will yield the biggest performance gain. By far.

The Big Bad Norm Posted June 4, 2012 Share Upgrade to Ultegra. Agree with above post, Mavic rims you have are perfect, you will need to spend alot more to get similair in carbon etc.
Iwan Kemp Posted June 4, 2012 Share What performance gains will you get going from 105 to Ultegra? No use upgrading just to get the next best thing. Spend money on stuff that will translate into better times. You have good wheels, but at a quoted weight of 1550g they are quite heavy. Shedding weight on your wheels = time gain and less energy used. Winning! If R10k doesn't buy you enough of an upgrade over your current wheelset rather save up. You don't HAVE to go carbon. There are plenty of lighter wheels available in Alu.

JoJaCa Posted June 4, 2012 Share Also look into KCNC components. You can lose quite a lot of weight by using their lightweight scandium components. However, If you can save a lot of weight on a set of wheels for less than R 10 000, go for it, because rotational weight makes a huge difference. Schnavel Posted June 4, 2012 Share It's something like for every gram saved on the wheels is equivalent to 4 grams saved on the frame, simply due to the rotational advantages... Look around on the hub, there are lots of sets of lightweight wheels for sale, such as a set of Zipp 404s... The next question you need to ask yourself is, do you want clincher or tubby wheels? Tubbies are much lighter, but if you puncture it's race over
Zatek Posted June 4, 2012 Share Touch wood, I haven't had a puncture yet I have Gatorskins. Do you get the same type of tyre for tubbies?

DJR Posted June 4, 2012 Share I like the idea of DOING something rather than BUYING something. I know 10 grand isn't going to get you a ride up the Tourmalet or Mont Ventoux, but together with next years 10 grand it may just translate into the experience of a lifetime. Don't like the Tour De France? How about riding the Camino in Spain? Or a trip down the Danube or all over Holland? You already have a great bike and unless you are truly into racing for the podium, better wheels are just going to make you feel good for a few weeks. DOING something meaningful will become part of you for a lifetime. My 2 c worth. Akon
DJR Posted June 4, 2012 Share Otherwise I'm for better wheels. Selling the Ksyriums for a good price?
