Lying in bed at support station Toekomst 12 days in knowing I should be asleep, but following Martin and Alex on twitter - all I can say is that the achievement is simply phenomenal, to finish this thing is monumental, but to do it in under 10 days is hard to fathom. Martin came past us at Ntsikeni - a true gentleman and a dogged competitor - Alex too.Take my hat off to them.

You must have seen how fresh and strong Martin looked at the finish. Amazing athlete.

10 days 16 hours and 40 mins. Astonishing, and well done Martin !

What a great race and pushed all the way by Alex who is also likely to break his old record. Respect.

Martin Dreyer a top trend on Twitter this morning!

Now let's hope Graham Bird comes in 3rd close to or even better than Alex's previous record.

Graham "tweet" Bird finished RASA2012 in 13 days 9hrs and 5 minutes - 3rd place for him. With Martin and Alex duelling it out up front very little mention was made of tweet but he deserves credit too just like all other finishers of this gruelling race.

He actually beat Tim James 2009 record - he now has the 4th best time in the history of the race - Well done tweet.

4th place finisher Trevor Ball also had a great ride finishing in 15 days 9hrs 5 minutes.

Looks like a 26"

Thought it was a 26er too from pictures, but is indeed a 29er. He only got it about 4 days before the race, and it went like stink.

Only real modification it was his saddle which was a wide, granny looking thing. Did the trick.

Martin is not really known as a MTBer, mainly due to his massive canoeing heritage. He has however kicked ass in a lot of AR events where they ride bloody quick at the fast end. And he rode with John Ntuli, one of his academy students, this year in that expensive race sponsored by the red bank to 45th place.

more from the finish and the prizegiving, Martin said that he'd agreed to do the race next year with Jeannie as they never took a proper honeymoon. But this time(his 3rd) he was happy to go at whatever pace she wanted. From a 26 day cruise(highly recommended) to full on racing. Basically, do you want to chill out, or afkak?

Jeannie said she wants to 'afkak'.

That woman's record is under serious pressure.

This might be a really stupid question but I hope the vets can give me an answer.

Why is everyone using a backpack and not a carrier/pannier? Surely there are carriers that fits to a DS bike and you don’t need to carry the weight on your back. Is it due to the amount of carrying the bike and you need to tie the bike to your backpack or what?

I am looking to do some long distance traveling on the bike through similar rough terrain and I battle with the backpack, so was thinking of rather using a carrier and tying the backpack to it?

There are some significant portage sections on the RASA race route and my view is that panniers would make it more difficult for you to carry your bike. I do not know of anyone who has used panniers in the race before but in 2010, two Aussies had some great frame bags which they used to carry their gear and rode with small camelbacks. These frame bags fitted very nicely into the front triangle and also behind the seatpost.

If you doing the touring route then panniers could work - you can do the touring route anytime of the year.
