AM tyres... what you running?

Just a look at how our tyres held up in the mud on the way up Steilte yesterday. Alot of packing going up but both setups shed the mud really well as soon as we increased the rpm by means of pointing our bikes downhill. Wet, cold, rainy but tons of fun!

Anyone used a Spez Butcher before?

Awesome tyre! I got my bike with a butcher up front, had no issues and it gripped well. I changed to a 29x2,5 minion, I just cannot keep the front from washing out! they do have very similar tread paterns. The minion washing out must be due to a different compound to the butcher.

I'm struggling to get a Butcher 27.5 in grid they only have it in control and it is not ideal. The sidewall flexes too much.

The sidewalls are pretty thin. For a front tyre I have found the control to be sufficient. I do expect to go through sidewalls though. I'm at peace with that.

I was looking for the grid a few months ago and absolutely no luck even through a sneaky mate or two. They hadn't landed yet and to be honest I'm not sure if they have yet.

  • 1 month later...

This thread is massive and maybe this question has been answered but can anyone give me the shortened version.... My story...

  • 2.4 Conti mountain king on the front. 2 Rides at Hakahana (Sp2) and it's finished
  • 2.4 Conti Xking protection on the rear. 3 Rides at Hakahana and missing a lot of my knobbies
  • 2.4 Bronson on the front - one ride at Thaba and sidewall sliced

Bear in my mind this is 26" so my options may by limited. I am looking for something as hardcore as they come in the front and maybe a little less hardcore on the back...

Please help! I can't continue buying tyres every two weeks... :(

Do you think you are very hard on tyres ie is this ^^ kind of destruction the norm?

People moan about Schwalbe too, but I have pretty good luck with their knobs - nothing ripped off, but the softer compound definitely do tear the knobs a bit ( still grip tho)

I think Minions are good - have a 26" DHR 2 in 2.3 at the back - the AM version. Its lasted well and no tearing side knobs. Sidewalls seem tough too. Got a pair from Action Cycles in Cape Town.

Tyres are personal - riding style and bike set up determine how you experience them. Sounds like you may need harder compound for durability.

I think it isn't just the make/model of a tyre you get that is important, but actually the compound and make-up of that tyre and side walls. If you want Hakahana proof tyres I would recomend looking at the "Hans Dampf Evo Snake Skin TrailStar TL-Ready folding" or the Onza Ibex 65/55a...

Apparently Evo bikes has the 26" in stock (havent looked, heard) but I am waiting for world shortage to be over on the 27.5" <_< Edit: refering to the HD's

Jislaaikit boet sorry to hear. I've only had the wolverine on the back for a few weeks but I am sold. Mostly hardpack stuff but I have tried to make the back slide out (previous issues I had with rear tyres) and it just won't give. Its fast too. But mine is on a novatech hub that doesn't spin for days like my previous dt swiss did so I don't know if I am really noticing it. As for the front. Running a super tacky 2.5 minion for a few months now and I am yet to see missing knobs or considerable wear. Its heavy though. Also skinny for a 2.5.

I think its softer than the 3c compound if i'm not mistaken. Grippiest tyre I've ever had. Not as fast as the highroller but she has some nails that girl simply won't let go. Also 26

I would admit that my line choice isn't always the smoothest and I do tend to be a bit hard on them... Will look into the minions a bit further. Yeah a lot of personal preference so I think I am slanting towards a stronger compound at the moment.... When I go down to Kzn I may switch out to a softer tyre

I hear things about these Onza Ibex's. My friend also suggested them so will pop around evo bikes maybe this week and give them a look see.

Thanks for the detail on the minions, I do lean towards the fatter tyre as oppsoed to the thinner one like the minion but will give it a look see..

Much appreciated. Going to look into those three tyres this week a bit more. I guess my personal preference is hard compound, slightly on the fatter side and sticks like glue... Without breaking the bank

I have a Maxxis High Roller 2.5 x 26 DH tire you can have for the price of a six pack. Not sure of compound etc, will have to check.

I'm guessing it was the single ply Bronson 2.3? The new dual ply Bronson (which is the only one the agents bring in now) has thick, strong sidewalls which you can't even bend. I've ridden them at Hakahana with dried up sealant and yet to have a puncture on my trail hardtail.

Are those what Wtb calls the inner peace sidewalls?

26er wheels Im running Ardent upfront and Nobby Nic Rear.

2 x 650b wheelsets both with Onza Ibex front, Vittoria Saguaro rear.

I used to ride Conti's on the 26er but after chowing sidewalls and knobs ripping off I had enough and changed brands. Super stoked with the Ardent.
