I'd like to catch a train and use my bike to get from the station to my destination.

I only catch the train about 3-4 times a year but never with my bicycle and can't recall ever seeing one on a train.

Are there any rules regarding taking a bike on the train?

Last time i caught a metro rail it was a free for all.. People even smoking weed in the train. So doubt your bike would be too much of an issue.

No metrorail security doesnt allow you to board a train with your bike, its not like first world countries where they have bike racks in the trains. Even if its empty they will expunge you.

Every now and again I see people on the trains with their bikes, but the rules regarding this is a bit fuzzy.

I have heard that its not allowed, but then again experience has contradicte this. Its best to give metrorail's helpline a call. The helpline is actually not to bad. When I have a free moment I might give them a call.

I think there's all sorts of *** about using the goods wagon, etc. You're supposed to be able to take them on the buses, I think, but only during off-peak hours.

Off course, as Covie points out, put a person in a uniform and they become omnipotent, even if they don't know what the rules are.

Very rare to find any country that accommodates this 100%, Germany is most likely the best example. Thats also limited though.

Biggest issue seems to be planning, lots of people complaining but no engagement, fortunately Jhb has recently started investigating cycle infrastructure. One of the key issues being looked at is getting trains to accommodate bicycles especially. Gov/council is slowly coming round to the concept and importance of cycle commuting/transport.

Edit: Of course this doesn't help the OP who is in CT

Depending on were you bord your train, you might have to pay R10 extra for the bike (or not ;-) ). Entering or exiting at Cape Town station, you will pay

Whatever you do, either lock the bike onto a pole inside the train or sit on top of it. Most spacious place is to bord right behand the train driver, otherwise people bump into you all the time

Not much help, but when I was a student at stellenbosch I had a sick vespa that I needed to get to cape town. Put it on the train and took it off at cape town station and managed the short distance to the mechanic.

It would be so short sighted of metro rail to not allow bikes on a train.
