is the tour divide not a long enough ride(at 4800km)?! was won by a belt drive/rohloff this year

I think this could be the touring option of choice in time. all about the low maintenance

Touring and hard racing will have a different effect on the system to be honest.

agreed, I don't this will ever make it into the WC/XC circuit.

Probably 95% of belts out there are on commuters, low hassle and no chain lubing seems to be the main idea behind it.

Raleigh’s XXIX model has seen some significant changes from the past year’s edition. These include a return to the geometry that is more common amongst hard tail 29″ers these days and more closely mimics that of Raleigh’s other hard tail 29″ers. Still a steel bike, the new Raleigh with Gates’ Carbon Drive Center Track was a pretty impressive rig. More on this one later as well.

My Sawyer with Gates newish CenterTrack carbon belt drive. Rode at van Gaalens this weekend and I'm very impressed, more than expected!

Went through lots of mud, water, steep climbs, drops, technical rocky sections, etc. Had to tighten the belt after it slipped 2 or 3 times (skipping a tooth, sounds like a gun shot) on very steep little climbs where I really had to power up with me little sticks. After tensioning the belt a bit it was heaven, with no further problems. The belt drive feels extremely smooth, silent and the CenterTrack belt do not need to be tensioned as much as the previous belt drives, so less load on the rear hub giving you a better drive. This is only one ride and there's still many rides to come to see how much can be thrown at it, but so far so good.

I thought with the rear split you would feel perhaps a twist or something in the frame when you accelerate hard and fast, but It felt very solid. They designed the frame with the split very well in my opinion. It's a beautiful steel machine and the pictures don't do it justice with my mik n druk.

The bike is 12 kg, but it gives you a very comfortable riding position, especially with those cruiser style handle bars which I just love. Can drop at least another 1.5 kg with lighter wheels, seat post, saddle, brakes, etc, but that I can easily drop in body weight x 10 rather than dishing out more cash on it. It's perfect as it is and the only thing I still need to change is the tyres to tubeless (the rims are tubeless ready). You can easily race with it as is, I doubt you'll be able to get that SSWC2012 tattoo with it though.

Many Motorcycles have converted from chain to belt. Some of the advantages are reduced maintenance (time and cost), reduced noice etc.

So I think there are advantages to cyclists that are worth investigating. It pays to keep an open mind, I wonder what was said about microwaves or tv in its early stages of development.
