JA-Q001 Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 (edited) Take one of the names listed that use blank frames, then paint it and sell it at 400% profit. If it breaks in a year, they replace it and still make a huge profit, even if it breaks again. Now, buy that same frame as a blank and pay 1/5 of the price. if it breaks in a years time, buy a new one. you still save 3/5 of the branded version. Edited September 4, 2012 by JA-Q001 ChUkKy 1
BushGoblin Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 So what I understand of a lifetime warranty, it doesn't mean for ever, it is for the life cycle of the frame production? I stand to be corrected.

A Chinese blank does not necessarily cost 20% of a local frame. A Giant XTC 29 aluminium frame weighs as little as 90% of these Chinese carbon blanks and cost around R3 000 - 50% of your "cheap" Chinese frame. A Giant XTC 29 carbon frame weighs a lot less than 90% of these Chinese carbon frames and costs around R9 000 - 33% more than your "cheap" Chinese frame. And here's the thing - both frames have lifetime warranties and if something goes wrong they will replace your frame within days.

I stand to be corrected. The lifetime of the bike. I broke a first generation Giant Anthem after 3 years of racing and Giant gave me a new 2nd generation Anthem as a warranty replacement. Edit to say the lifetime warranty applies so long as you're the original owner of the bike. I like the brand aswell. And yes, you can get alu blank frames aswell, at 20% the price.

JA-Q001 Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 And its not all about weight. A Pinarello is not the lightest bike around and yes, its full carbon, but you pay R50k for it, if not more. Now, go check on roadbikereview how many people own replicas of that bike and only paid R8000.

sometime Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Check ebay, you'll find a few bargains. LOL You win.
awesme Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Ok some questions then,Can you get the aluminium frames. blank or from the vendor. Atm I've asked Ghost, Scott and Cube, all said nope, they just bringing in complete bikes. playing with a 27.5 FS idea. G On the assumption that your cheap bike lasts a year or two. If not your justification is fatally flawed. Also as a previous poster pointed out, people are buying these "cheap" blank carbon frames that weigh more than quality SA sourced aluminium frames. Once again the flawed assumption is that any carbon frame is better than an aluminium one.
Sean32 Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 I have just bought one of these frames building it as we speak. Weight came in at 1150g for a 12K weave 26er. Seat post came in at 200g for a 300mm long post in 3K weave. Yes you can buy junk but the same time you can be buying the same quality as the top brand bikes and in all probability this no name brand could be coming out the same factory. The same QC check as any other frame. Yes you could have a problem with the warranty but we have also heard stories that some guys can’t get the warranty sorted out from the top brands as well. So the end of the day each to their own. Me I am not worried about a name brand. I can buy 3 frame and still have some change.
