My concern with all these supplements is the lack of control over what goes in them. As I understand it they fall outside of food safety and have few controls. And with some of them having ingredients which are seemingly banned stimulants does not appeal to me either, even if I'm not a top competitor. Surely a natural smoothie will have same benefits?

Whole food is defnitely the winner and supplements will never replace them....but powders are convenient, and this conveniency is sometimes the only solution to get the job done. As per my example...the recovery shakes was handed to me as I crossed the line of day1 and day2 of sani this year. I started my recovery immediately and the timing of this is key. If I had to go the whole foods route I would have had to sprint for the food hall leaving my bike and my black box until I have grazed. Also I would still be dirty as a pig and you don't always have the appetite after riding a 100km, a shake is far easier to get down. So not totally impossible but also not really an option. If we look at fuel while I am riding...yes I can carry 3 hotdogs and banana with me, but I didn't have the means to prepare them...Once again, totally impossible....no, but not really an option. In a stage race my recovery procedure is as follows, and has worked for me.

Smash a recovery shake as you cross the line

Give bike a quick wash and lube

Get box / bag...go to tent

Shower(don't know if its a mental thing, but I always feel better after I am clean)

Smash lunch....drink 2 steristumpy's or mmmmmilks

Have a powernap...relax...talk crap...make sure bike is fine for next day....drink a beer or two

Have dinner + another beer or two

Say goodnight to wife and daughter...smash another recovery shake right before you sleep

The nice thing about powders are that you can prepack each day's nutrition seperately...mix before you start...easy peasy.

I use the chocolate flavoured 32GI Recovery mixed with half fat-free milk and half water. It tastes pretty good; if you use more milk and shake it enough it's like drinking a milkshake. I've been using it for about 5 months now, and it seems to have the same effect on me as the Biogen Recovergen, which I was using previously.

We have been looking at this side of the market for a while now - seeking something to specifically to the needs of cyclists.

I was made by cyclists for cyclists. Only the best and healthiest ingredients will do.

We have our Recovery Booster ready and waiting but we have decide to keep that launch official back a few week to co-inside with the release of our 3rd flavor on the Marathon racing fuel.

It has been developed with the help of a Pro Mountain biker - that shall remain un-named for now - as he has just moved sponsors and we are still in negotiation with him and his sponsor to sign him on as the official face of our products.

We have sent some sample off to randomly selected Hubbers for review and we will also have a Hubber special upon the official launch.

All the info is available on the website and orders can also be placed.

Check it out at :

If anyone has any questions or needs any other info - feel free to contact me at vinceATsingletrackfuelDOTcom

Its still a little on the down low un till the official launch but this thead just can not be ingnored.

I am using this stuff. It's really nice and it feels like it's working. Also using the Marathon fuel during races. Best taste IMO... some of the other brands' stuff is good, but this I can drink for thirst as well, whereas with some of the other stuff I need to keep water with me for the thirst.

I often shake when I am recovering.

But on a more seriaaas note.

I like USN Recovermax, the chocolate one tastes like Lindt and I mix L_Glutamine powder with it.

I do this when I have big days to rebuild muscle fibre.

Also drink lot's of water.

L-Glutamine. Is it best to mix it with the recovery shake for immediately after my ride or would there be any merit to mixing it with the water in my waterbottle and consuming this during my ride? Or does it not make a difference?

I would not take it during a ride, for recovery and also before bed.

I only drink it after rides as well, but I honestly don''t really know why. Any insight as to why not to drink it during a ride?

I have been tapering for 2 days now. Think this "recovery shake" thingy can add value the morning before the race as well or rather the evening before?

No benefit if you are properly carbo loaded - either the evening before or in the morning - stick with what you know you can tolerate before a race - and going bigger will not help - might have some disasterous consequences too.

Recovery starts on the bike. I do the following for harder rides longer than 2 hours.

My magic formula for on the bike (per 100ml): one teaspoon honey + 17ml Milo milk + rest water

After the bike: Milo and biltong on the way home and then a proper meal at home

Think of your body as having two fuel tanks: one is for general use and one is muscle specific. You fill up with carbs, fats and proteins (all gives energy). You can only fill to the top (therefore if you eat enough in any case you don't need extra "carbo loading" - that will only cause the tank to overfill and spill). The other one is in the muscles and can only be used for muscles (can also only fill it to the top).

When you ride you use fuel and then you can fill up again afterwards = "recovery". Also, muscles might've been injured if you went hard so you need some protein to fix and make them stronger. You need fat also for lots of body functions (including energy), but the the most important is probably for the brain.

This is really just a simple explanation.
