This thread reminded me of a knife I bought new on a whim as a kid. Buggered around with it for a while and when met my future wife she insisted it get put away, so it's been in a drawer for 30 plus years. Went to the Puma site to get date of manufacture: 1973. The sheath was custom made by ?Sharp Edge (they were in the underground section of the Carlton Centre).

A very nice Puma fixed blade hunter, please show us what the handle looks like.

I well remember The Sharp Edge in the old Carleton centre.

Here is one of mine that has seen extensive use.

Not sure what else you want to see? When I bought this knife I looked at getting a White Hunter, but it scared me too much!

Thanks for posting the pictures.

I like to see a knife's general balance and aesthetics.

Nice.

I have a bit of a collection including one which has the face of Paul Kruger on it and it says "Transvaal" and then "Eendracht maakt Macht" and on the bottom it says "Oranje ....." cant make out the rest.

If you get caught in London with one of these in your pocket you will be arrested on the stop. Your name will appear in an offenders list and you may just find it rather difficult to get a job. In SA if you dont have one in your pocket people wonder whats wrong with you.

If you are in the Cape and you dont have one you are probably dead already and yours is in someone else's pocket .... just joking.

Make a pen nib with your penknife. Use bamboo for big nibs, a feather (preferably Turkey) for normal writing. Slice down the back portion to leave a nib shape. Press flat on the desk, and cut an appropriate angle (about 35 degrees) for your writing style. Press penknife in the middle so the nib splits - not too far. Dip in ink and practise your calligraphy.

Today's useless bit of Hub information.

Why dont you do a thread on this with a step by step dummies guide (for me) with pictures ? sorry I'm a stickler for detail. Its like posting a howto on changing a watch battery with no pics and half the detail.

A very nice and interesting collection of old slip joints.

I see a few very nice "keepers" in there.

If you can I would like to see pictures of the knives laid out side by side with open blades.

Old slip joint knives (non-locking) are very beautiful in my eyes.

Thanks for posting.

It says Oranje Vrijs (Oranje Vrijstaat) at the bottom, with the two respective heralds for the two provinces. On the other side it shows Presidents Kruger and De Wet. It was a commerorative knife to remember the signing of peace between the two then states. They sold these replicas at the Kruger Park in the 70's, maybe earlier....I wasn't around. They are pretty cheap and junky, but you definitely do not see them anymore. I have one in better condition.

@ Seeker

I'm impressed that so many of them have corkscrews, you must be a closet Capie!

On a related matter, I have been looking out for a quality sharpening system.

I have seen some online that clamp the knife in the vertical and you can then adjust the "stones" in or out to get the appropriate angle on the blade. You then stroke the stones back and forth along the edge to get it sharp.

Anyone able to recommend a particular system that is not over the top expensive? I want to be able to sharpen pocket knifes to butchers knifes if possible.

Seen this option: http://www.knifeworks.com/lanskyuniversalsharpeningsystem.aspx

I use the lanky to sharpen all my knifes from pocket knives to kitchen knives I would highly recommend it especially as a starting point to ensure your blades keep a good edge I know there are some knock off's that are a bit cheaper and just as good another nice one is the spyderco though I think it will take a little more skill but will be more rewarding in the long run http://m.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=77
