Event Name: Tiletoria West Coast Express
When: 21 October 2012
Where: Sunningdale Sports Club, Table View, Western Cape
Category: Road

The TILETORIA West Coast Express, to be held on Sunday 21st October from Sunningdale Sports Club, is billed as the Fastest Flattest Ride in the West, and for the past 8 years has seen unprecedented growth. According to Rodney Beck, Chairman of the Table View based Outriders Cycle Club, popularity of the event can be attributed to the fact that we cater for all levels of cyclists, and that funds raised from the event are donated to various charities. The main beneficiary this year is Afrika Tikkun.

The event has three distances, 85km, 65km, and 19km. The 85km route starts at 06h30 and traverses the R27 and then turns right to Mamre where the riders encounter a little hill called the “never ender” as just when you think you are on the top, it just seems to continue forever. From that point on its fast and furious going past Atlantis where speeds of 50 – 60 km are the norm for the racing group. From there, the route sweeps off to Melkbos taking in the majestical view of Table Mountain where the route finishes on Big Bay Boulevard. The 85km route has league status so attracts all Cape Town’s top rides and those who wish to hone their racing skills.

The 65 km route leaves at 07h15 and also follows the R 27. At the Melkbos turnoff it turns right towards the N7, then its onto the Old Mamre road, into Atlantis and back to the finish following the same route as the 85km.

The 19km which starts at 08h30 caters for the novice and parent/child rider.

There is plenty on offer for family members who are waiting for their loved ones to complete the fun ride. The start/finish has a carnival type atmosphere with lots of food, music, face painters and a jumping castle for the kids.

At the finish there will be a commemorative medal for the first 1,500 finishes. Expect lots of lucky draw prizes like bicycles, hotel vouchers, lots of bike accessories and Tiletoria, who have sponsored the event for 4 years, will be giving a R 5 000.00 voucher that can be used on tiles, laminates, sanware etc. from the Tiletoria showroom.

Thanks for the reminder ... I must make sure we are not at home on that day as traffic is horrendous and many of the bloody roadies doing this event think they can park where and how they want with no regards to anybody else.

Good on you, planning around it instead of sitting in your house that morning and complaining afterwards!

I'll do my bit by cycling there from Durbanville.

Look who has entered the Tiletoria WCE - Ernst Van Dyk is a South African wheelchair racer. He has won a record 9 wheelchair titles in the Boston Marathon. He was also awarded the Laureus World Sports Awards for Sportsperson with a Disability of the year for 2006. Van Dyk finished fifth at the 2012 Paralympics TT and secured a silver medal in the men’s individual Paralympic H4 road race. Stuart Mc Creadie who finished seventh in the men's individual H2 time trial finals will be racing him for line honours in the 85km route.

yeah, this was about to happen. let's make it a "inconsiderate roadies debate", once again. I am so over this - I have got a road bike and a mountain bike, shave my face, not my legs, but wear lycra on both bikes. Oh damn, I don't fit in a box.

Take a chill pill dude.

Read my post again .... I said "many of the bloody roadies" ....

Seriously now, the guys park over pedestrian crossings in front of the school, on the pavements thereby forcing the pedestrians to walk in the road.

I just do not believe the location is suited to the volume of cars and it has in previous years been managed poorly.

OK I do agree with you fully - and the same applies to concerts, soccer matches, mtb races etc...(sadly there are inconsiderate idiots everywhere). I also thought that the race itself must be the most dangerous one in the calendar - with 40 ton trucks passing the groups at 90 Km/h and about half a meter distance. And yet I'll probably be doing it again, and yes, I do park properly.

Hairy - I think you/your community should take it up with the race organisers. Perhaps something could be done, before some inconsiderte person parks in your driveway, or on the curb or even the school.

Fully agree. Last year just before Koeberg towards Melkbos we had an incident in the bunch and some of us instinctively swerved out to avoid a pile-up. By the grace of God nothing happened, even though a truck came flying past us just seconds after we'd collected ourselves into a bunch again. One of my more enjoyable road races, but that incident made me seriously re-think whether I want to do the event again. But I guess that could happen in any of the road races.

I found the think bike marshalls we had with our group really handled this well. There were 2 of them and one would ride behind us holding up however was behind whilst the other rode ahead warning oncoming traffic of our presence. When these chaps saw a gap, the chap at the back would signal to the vehicles behind him to follow and he would pull through alongside warning us and escorting vehicles past. The other guy who was out front would then start dropping to behind the pack to make sure any other vehicles catching up to our group didn't simply latch on to the overtaking bus and they'd start the cycle all over again. It was superbly orchestrated stuff!
