I don't understand any of this. If it is a mountain bike just get out there and ride the damn thing. That is what it is for. If it gets muddy just clean it properly. If you have to worry so much about the cost of maintaining it you probably shouldn't have it in the first place. Had an excellent ride in the rain and mud yesterday morning (48km) and another one in the mud this morning (50km) . Bike already cleaned and ready for the next ride. It is after all an off-road bike. Ride it. Otherwise just hang it on the wall and look at it. That way you don't have to worry about the cost of maintenance. BORING!!

this is is turning into a healthy debate. I think the conditions we encounter in different parts of the country make a difference. There are parts of kzn that I would not touch with a barge pole because of the red clay mud...but there are other parts that are fantastic to ride in the mud

I am by no means a fair weather mtbiker.....so you can call me a woes for choosing not to ride after 50+ mm of continuous rain in addition to 2000 odd tyre going through the mud....but if I can just as easily ride in the afternoon of the next day without all the traffic then I will choose that.

Heres an idea. Stop buying expensive parts. I've got a 5yr old merida hard tail piece of crap. I'll whip almost anyone's butt on it. And I really don't care how muddy it is

we have to upgrade sometime though.....if I still had my 6yr old bike which I have just sold, I would have been playing in the mud today

Yeh. But are top of the end drivetrains necessary ?

Fat people should not be allowed to buy high end light weight components. There should be a grading system that only allows top riders, with decent skills access to anything above XT/X9.

...and only the pros should be on 29ers?

...and only top 50 Ironman contenders should be allowed TT bikes?

I quite like that I can go out and buy what the pros are using.

In motorsport and other tech driven sports this is often not possible

I still love seeing jappies on their "Rich" bikes... and their silly coments like, No Way you can bunnyhop without clipless. Or as soon as as their speed drop below 5Kph, they fall over or start wobbling! Guys like these keep our biking shops alive and allow guys like me to buy the good stuff for next to nothing second hand :)

Youre starting to sound like colin aka pornstar....

I have a theory about this;

During the years before the recessions, when men reached their mid-life crisis, they'd pop out and buy a little two seater sports car. It was a little 'up yours' to the line they'd been toeing for so many years; a little rekindling of the youthful spirit.

Now times are tough, many people don't have the spare cash to get that little car, so what do they do? With helpful encouragement from wifey (bless her soul), they pop out to the LBS and buy a full house carbon 29er mountainbike, with all the trimmings, which includes the tights, aero helmet, bar ends, camelbak and a large tub of bum lube.

Wifey is thrilled because hubby is doing something active for a change, he's out of the house for a bit over weekends so she can enjoy a little 'me-time' ;)

Off to Tokai he goes with his new, shiny whip. Only problem is, he's got a gut that hangs over top tube, he has zero skills, no flexibility, no fitness, no clue.

This is the DREAM client of the LBS though, and agreed, it's what keeps them all alive. Even though this kind of rider would not feel the difference between X0 and X3, he'd rather have the best, and can afford to.

It is also what contributes to the trails being watered down.

Quirky little sport we have here.

Haters will hate...leave the okes on their top of the pops bikes...they are enjoying themselves / having a jol, instead of worrying what other people are riding like some of you.

Agreed!

stretch, if you train a bit harder it might only be 1000 odd tyre tracks :P
