My wife have been talking about us starting to ride Mountainbike tandem...

I need some feedback of people's experiences when starting out - good and bad.

she is very strong on a mountainbike, and technically very good. She also rails the downhills. So i have no worry about that aspect of the riding.

It's the "other" dynamics that has me a bit wary.

As long as you guys are similar in strength and riding techniques, no problems at all. It will take a few rides together to get into the same rythme, but once there, all good.

Mind you, I am talking from riding a tandem on the road though.

My wife and i ride our tandem on all the road races, she is also a fairly strong rider, we are lucky as she really enjoys the tandem, however i made the mistake of buying a mtb tandem and then the FUN began......She hated it due to the technical aspect and all the getting on and off on tight switchbacks and really rocky sections etc, needless to say we did 2 mtb races and sold the tandem mtb.

The road is way easier as you are nearly all the time on nice straight roads etc, but on a mtb tandem it becomes a different ball game all together.

No ways we will be riding on the road.

There was a couple on the Sani this year (adventure) they flippin rode that bike like i have not seen a tandem ridden before...it was amazing. If we could manage that, i reckon the enjoyment factor will be top notch.

Will be mostly distance days on dirt roads

But

I would not put it past me to try out the tandem with her around rietvlei...

best bet would be to rent a MTB tandem and have it for a day to see...

You all seem lucky that you have partners that are cylists .... my boet rides tandem at 94.7 every year with his wife, she rides a few times in the weeks leading up to it.

His take on it 'it's like lifting someone the whole way' - they do have a rock solid marriage so it hasn't been a problem ..... should I add 'yet'?

Cannot comment on MTB tandem - I cannot see me being that brave.

However on road tandem - yes I can recommend the tandem "other" dynamics!

It was my idea to get a tandem as my impatience to wait for my wife while we were on individual bikes was not good. I thought I might as well get a proper workout while pedalling a tandem for us both rather than to stand and wait next to the road waiting for her to catch up. Well long story short we became such a team when we started racing. It was great fun to train together and race. Gave a new dynamic to cycling (I've been cycling couple of years when we started the tandem). Honestly after a tuff ride to talk about it was great because both shared the same experience.

Go on try it.

My wife rode a MTB tandem for many years as the stoker. If you want to ask her views send me your details via PM and I will get her to call you.

Speak to Growler. He and his wife ride an MTB tandem. They did Sani2C adventure and have also done a number of other races. For various reasons she is not nearly as strong as him but they still manage very well.

In that context an MTB is correct. If I had written Mountain bike it would have been a mountain bike but it is an MTB tandem.

Tandems have no grey areas, either hunnymoon or divorce court. Nothing inbetween. We have a MTB Mountain bike and two road tandems.

We are not nearly competent or strong enough to do hilly and technical rides, but we enjoy or MTB Tandem. We managed tight jeep tracks in Mozambique quite well as few years ago.

The stoker cannot see the road ahead. You HAVE to be very converse to tell the stoker what to expect or you will eat dirt.

Haha…I misread the tag-line:

“Talk to me about tantrums and wives…”

(Damn…was just on my way to go get the packet of Microwave popcorn that I had left over after the IPhone 5 thread… )
