Take nothing away from the great names of the past but it is indeed worthy to wonder about the level of competition in those days. It was not mainstream at all. Did Merckx and some of the others only cycle. Allot of those competitors were actually amateurs riding in the big league but they had day jobs. I think guys like Merckx, Hinault were some of the few that only focussed on the sport

Seriously though. Greg LeMond. Has to be

I was not going to comment in this topic as I feel to determine as to who the greatest cyclist ever was/is will be a massive undertaking.

But surely with the comment above you are just monkeying around ?

as a question, why no olympic results?

The one that enjoys the ride, helps fellow cyclists, does not litter, is respectful to other riders, marshals, bike shop owners and personnel, and never, ever, blames the bike.

That could be any one of us. tongue.png

Ertjies Bezuidenhout. Steak and eggs as fuel and a lead block attached to his bottom bracket to give the other riders a chance

I don't know but suspect that at the time the Olympics still had their strictly amateur rules.

A good question, and one to follow up on.

Anyone who completed the TDF in it's earliest years. They rode double the distance, on unpaved roads, with no support (in fact support was not allowed - you had to carry your spares yourself), had to ride at night and had to arrange their own accommodation and food.

There were still cheats though - some took glass bottles of milk which they'd break on the road to shred competitors tyres.

And puffed cigarettes believing it helped open their lungs.

He may not be THE greatest, and he still has a lot of time left to do some more great things... but even so far I think Chris Akrigg deserves a mention.

As an all rounder he's amazing. Trials, trails, track. He can hold his own wherever!

Definitely in the running with Brian Lopes.
