Don't do it solo. Get a training partner and sit and chat all the way.

Time passes quickly and you don't get bored.

This works for me, but only because we have more or less the same goals in mind. I also have another friend where this is totally impossible, because he is way too competitive, he will try to chase down Lance Armstrong (OK, bad example) just because he can't help himself.

Stop for a full English within an hour of starting your ride, then do another two hours - the worsies and bacon will determine he pace ;)

I know a few people that would actually talk so much your ears will start bleeding and somehow you hand will grab the front brake so hard you will die!!!

biggrin.png We had one of those a while back and it always resulted in the ride going faster and faster until the talking stopped or the talker got dropped (sometimes it resulted in me getting dropped even if I wasn't the guilty partylaugh.png) .

My Garmin has an alert for min or max HR ...

Do you have technology that can assist you?

My Polar is strapped to the handle bar and I keep a constant eye on it. The problem is not that I dont know what my HR is doing, more that I struggle to stop myself trying to be KOM or chasing down a truck.

Tip? Don't you dare sign up to Strava! That doomed my training regime... Not a ride that goes by that I'm not tempted to better my PR or go for the KOM.

OOPS!! Ive just signed up, wanted to give it a bash this weekend.

If you have got a MTB, use it to take a slow ride on a district road. It is easier to pedal along slowly on a dirt road. Take a partner with you, it helps passing the time.

The reason you can't do it is because you can't let go of your ego. Deep down you still want to chase trucks and show the workers on the back of the passing bakkie how good you are. And if you see a rider up ahead you have to show him whose boss.

If you want to do LSD properly you need to make a conscious decision to leave your ego at the door, take enough food/drink for a 5+hr ride (or take money - my preference), and just go on a long relaxing tour of your province.

And when you're riding along and a gardener on his rusty Game special comes cruising past you, and you don't react, then you know you've taken a big step forward.

Something that works for me is to find a new adventure on a totally new route.

And I use Google Earth a lot for that.

I want to get excited about the ride, so I might spend my evenings zooming into an area that I want to explore and then plot my route.

I can get so caught up in the planning of my long weekend ride that I daydream about it. If you get that excited about a long ride, then it won't be a schlep anymore. I stay away from local roads I already know. I will get into my car and head off before dawn and arrive in a new town, pull up to the local Checkers or Pick n Pay parking lot, and then start from there.

Here in KZN that means I will drive as far as 100km to a northern town where I've found a particularly epic route through rolling hills and maybe even an escarpment to climb. I just can't wait to see what's around each bend in the road, or what's over the next hill.

Become a tourer. That's when LSD becomes a blast.
