2 x 10 speed chains - what chain link can I use?

SRAM 10-speed links were designed by Satan himself. Use any other brand 10-speed link. The SRAM 10-speed link is black and branded "Powerlink". It can only be used once. Removing it destroys it. What's the use of that? You may as well use a Shimano chain pin then.

What do you mean? I've been using the SRAM 10-speed link for quite a while now with no issues.

I used SRAM links on my 9spd chains for ages and never had a problem even thought they say that they are single use only.

On my 10 speed chains, I will use KMC links.

There is a way to remove it and once you got the hang of it , its very easy . It involves a long nose plier , bend the chain 90d at the link and use plier on outside of chain !!! w00t.gif

Have you tried taking it off? I don't have strong hands but for the life of me, I couldn't get that thing undone. How did you do it?

You need a tool(parktool makes one), or hack it like dirt-rider(with longnose pliers)...either way it aint coming off without it.

... will give it a try (when I have my bike back from repairs). I also temporarily used an old sram 9 speed link after breaking my chain a few months back - not sure if I'd use it as a permanent fix as the "fit" is quite loose.

I mean what I said. It is a use-once only link. Taking it off destroys the retaining mechanism.

All other quick links are removed by compressing the link so that the pin's ridge can jump over the retaining tab. On the Powerlink, it snaps in under force. Removing it destroyes the little centre piece and it could thus come off by itself during riding.

The design of the Powerlink is COMPLETELY different to the design of other links, even within the SRAM range.

Agree...what the use of that???

A chainlink should be designed to be assembled /dissaaembled on the roadside/ trackside...

Who carries set of pliers with them on a ride??

So, KNC it will be.

I'm VERY happy wiff the 9spd chainlinks...I think they are SRAM (those gold jobbies??) ones... but as I understand, the 10spd ones are a totally new ball game...

I have previously used the older golden 9 speed SRAM Powerlink on my 10 speed MTB system with no problems at all.

Previously??

So, what do you use now??
