Ja, well, I'm gonna give the rigid a skip, I think. I wanna hit the trails and single track, and still have my front teeth afterwards. Even though I'm from Cape Town

Hi.

I'm getting miff with gears jumping, not shifiting etc. I need some help on possibly getting started with single speed. Can I use my current xt crank and just take some rings off? What do I do with the back wheel? Will I regret it? I'm not totally fit and not totally unfit, I ride the spruit often and try to include all the climbs I can find and mostly the trails around jhb and pta. Can I maney take one for a spin on the spruit to get my feet wet? Am I over thinking this?

Thanks guys.

If you are not fit now, with a single speed you soom will be...

I was also in two minds, but its actually not that bad...(niner carbon rigid fork). Just lower tyre pressures, gooi some ESI chunky's on and ride "light"...your elbows now become your shock absorbers. The pro's of the a rigid is its stiff, so you can climb like a bergbok...it handles very prescise and you feel more in contact with the terrain...glad it did it.

Want it as light as possible - rigid seems the way to go.

rouxtjie you also a dikgat like me, so weight on these carbon forks shouldn't be an issue?

Haha, I don't know anymore. Climbing is often where I make the other people hurt, so I like that part. Will have to find someone with a rigid SS and take it for a ride.

And it looks way more hardcore

Quick noob question: will I be able to use a 2008 Giant TCR Road frame and work around it? Or will I brake it? Got carbon fork and rear stays. Probably won't fit the fat tyres? Nevermind if it will be durable?

Several reasons to go rigid:

It looks super clean.

It's light (this is more consequence than reason though - most SSers ride steel bikes).

It makes you a better rider by forcing you to read and ride the terrain.

It's cheap(er).

It's fully like hard core bru.

Epic cycles centurion has everything you need

1 x tensioner

1 x rear cog

1 x spacer kit

oh and you WON'T regret it..do it

The very cheapskate version. : For a tensioner use the rear deraileur

Spacer kit: Ask at the lbs for a few discarded small cogs

Beware you become an instant snob the moment you climb on a single speed. Unlike the bike conversion it is irreversible

All those wimps with the gears are just such ( add favourite derogatory term here ).

You are the pinacle of cycling. untill the clown on the unicycle comes past

Ill be a poofta with a lefty then :D

Rigid is great but I do miss a suspension fork on my SS if only for the downhills.

Struggle to hit them fast and still be able to brake in time :D
