Tyre cuts (nerdy thread unsuitable for trolls)

Do any of you repair tyre cuts, and if so, what do you use?

 

I got annoyed that my new gatorskin got a cut on the shoulder and put some bath sealant in, which didn't last, and now some glue.

 

I know I should now buy an anorak and unfashionable glasses but I can't bring myself to chuck the tyre.  There's a race a week coming up and I'd hate to be puncturing out of false economies.

Buy some tyre liners and cut them into small pieces (2cm or so). Stick a couple in your spares bag and you should be able to get home no matter how bad the cut.

 

Can be a little tricky sliding the little sucker into the correct positioning but I've been riding a set of tyres I cut the day I got them with my mini-liners in and never had any problems. In fact they're almost through to the canvas (GP4000S).

JL funny thing i been on gator skins for a year now and no problems till recently i got a duwweltjie slap bang in the centre and ruined my ride in the westcoast park race we did.dont know what is it with the new gator's

 

i had a glass cut on one my old cheapie tyres and put a nice vulcanized patch on the inside and it seems to have held out quite well

Splash-out: buy another tyre - keep the torn one for the IDT ...

If it's not too long I have just patched it with one of those 'thicker' MTB like tube patches from the inside. Even used that in an MTB tyre with a tear.

If its a small cut JL, Naaaa, I dont bother.

 

Although if you are getting punctures from little stones getting through the cut, then Yah, you gotta change, (Obvious I guess) but if you arnt getting punctures dont worry about it.

 

As far as punctures go from cut tyres I have tried all the usual stuff they reccommend, tyre boots, bits of plastic, patches etc - its okay for a "get you home repair" but it never lasts. If you getting punctures, change the thing, otherwise you just gonna get irritated.!

yep, as shortlegs says you can use tyre liners. also use bits of old tubes work.

Would not chance on a road bike, but i have a fairly new MTB tyre that i've patched with caravan/MTB tyre sealant.

If the cut does not go throught the tire all the way, you can keep on riding  

 

IMO the best stuff to fix larger cuts with is aircraft feul tank sealant, called "PRC" I used be able to get some from work, but I've moved on since.

cuts on the tyre wall can be reinforced with a gator of some sorts. R50 notes work like a charm.  (R200 are even better), or use a very big patch (depending the size of the cut) on the inside of the tyre.  THis however is a temporary measure at best.  If the threading on the gator skin is cut rather replace it as those threads hold the shape of the tyre under pressure.  If there is a cut in the running serface, deflate the tyre, put a bit of the glue of your choice in the hole and wait a bit.

Got a small cut in one of my tires that punctured at the 94.7 which I haven't patched.

 

The likelihood of a similar sized piece of glass puncturing that exact spot is remote.

although glass likes virgin tyre, small stones and gravel don't mind any old hole, especially in wet weather.  THen over time it gently tears its though the tyre into the tube.

I have used dental floss to sew side wall cuts together - works a charm.

I use superglue to fix cuts in the rolling surface - no problems so far.

I once fixed a tubeless tyre with a huge sidewall cut by getting trentyre to fix it for me. Cost me all of five bucks, worked for another 900kms. Then the tread died. I'm sure it will work on a gatorskin as well, might just need a smaller patch though. Ride, spend money on something more pimp (and therefore unnecesary) for the bike.
