One of the reasons why I am no longer a member of the PPA.

Hardly any races in the Southern Suburbs.

Often the races also are not very safe. Crossing a railway with a small mat while the bunch is ten times wider and guess what happens, a crash.

Exactly which Southern Suburbs races cross railway lines?

Agreed. Doesn't Die Burger have a railway crossing, if memory serves correctly last year when we came past lotsa riders were scattered bashed en bruised on the side of the road.

Would it be right to say that's its probably easier to have road closure in northern suburbs as apposed to the souf?

Where it hits us (soufern suburbs livers) the petrol to drive to these races

The northern suburbs races.

Last year, Die Burger, huge crash at the railway crossing.

PPA could have clearly seen this and put a couple of mats over the lines so that they covered the whole road.

At basically every race where there is a railway crossing I have seen or heard of a crash.

There are some very good route possibilities in the South peninsula.

Starting from Noordhoek, Sun Valley or Fish Hoek the possibilities are endless to do loops and figure of eight rides on anything up to 80 kms or thereabouts without covering too much ground twice. There are enough local sportsgrounds to serve as start / finish venues. The routes can include Black Hill, Red Hill, Military Hill, Smitswinkels and Slangkop and will be tough enough for the racing snakes. The scenery will be super and those roads are fairly quiet and that will suit the funriders and beginners. It should not impact much on the functioning on greater Cape Town. It will also exclude the dangerously narrow and congested parts of the "old" routes like Spaanschemat Road and Muizenberg Main Road and thus be more youngster friendly.

I think the PPA should do some more tough negotiating with "the City that works for you" to make at least 3 races happen in the South peninsula.

Also keep in mind that this is not a permanent situation and that things should revert back to normal once the roadworks in Kalk Bay is completed, hopefully before next years summer season.

good points here

the mail that was sent out said nothing will happen in the South (ou kaaps, boys and main road) for summer 2013! so by next summer u mean 2014?

"Because of the above and specifically the increased traffic on Ou Kaapse Weg, we have now formally been advised by the Cape Town Events Office that NO routes will be approved that make use of Ou Kaapse Weg, or Main Road/Boyes Drive for Summer 2013."

I really believe it's PPA job to promote all cycling and that includes the Southern Suburbs fun rides. I ahve been hearing stories of lack of funding as a reason why the SS rides are no more, it costs R30k for traffic control etc.

So WHAT? PPA and Cycle Trust make millions from the World Championship Fun Ride every year, plough some of that back into what must some of the best amateur fun ride/racing in the world around the Point.

That's how you promote cycling, let people ride in safe and orgnised routes on roads with beautiful scenery and great climbs.

are you even serious? some of the best in the world? psssh
